The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. In a market this size, and with so many vendors overly focused on the U.S. Folding up shop for good – goodbye and nice knowing you. It was a myth.

More vendors enabling the use of APIs – i.e. people can create their own API and integrate them into the LMS/Learning Portal vendor’s system, this equally means you can create mashups too. This is a global issue and is not limited to the size of the vendor. Fear Factor: Vendor Pricing.

While, I can understand vendors who would rather not offer a “talent management or performance management&# option, the decision to ignore social learning, is strange. It is not as though, social learning is going to disappear. Time for these vendors to wake up, or see your audience share disappear.

In 2009 and 2010, many vendors in the LMS market, tossed in items that at one time were extra fees. E-Commerce, support, branding, customization (to a degree). While the global economy has yet to fully reverse itself, it is clear that many vendors believe it is, or realize that potential clients have no problem paying for it.
