Recently, I conducted an emerging technology survey related to e-learning and the results show that end users are utilizing technology more then ever before and are seeking product features that LMS and content authoring tools, do not offer at this current time. Answering your LMS Questions

How many of you have seen vendors respond to your questions? A: Virtually every LMS vendor out there in the marketplace provides these features. Examples: E-mail notification via SMS. Mobile learning – it might surprise you to know that 75-80% of all systems in the space, currently do not offer any type of mobile learning, the number goes up even higher for online/offline synch. Integrates with Workday. Smart App for TV – One LMS vendor.

This same contradiction is now happening in the e-learning world at a frightening pace. The people who suffer the most from this contradiction are the consumers and a vast majority of vendors. While mobile learning is moving at an incredible speed, faster than anticipated by some of my colleagues, it does not come without a cost. Regardless of whatever e-learning product you are using that states the ability to view and take assessments, courses, etc.

5 Trends to Watch 4 n 2011

A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

Mobile Learning. LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Sadly though many still are in the dark on true mobile learning – i.e. not accessing their platform via a mobile web browser. That said, why is this happening: A significant (over 90%) of vendors are holding off this year and at least part of next year from optimizing their solution to the iPad. But with LMS vendors jumping into the mobile learning sector, at least in some cases, it may be a tad misleading. Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

If you are like the thousands of other people exploring the purchase of a learning management system, the key to success is asking the right questions. . For people who are working on certification, does your system provide e-mail reminders to end users whose certification is near expiration and thus they need to go into the system and complete it? What about e-mail reminders for the following (time frame) to renew? Go directly to the 3rd party vendor whose courses they are.

Any vendor, who includes a set storage fee, should be able to provide you a range of number of courses – with examples and video/audio files – if you plan to use them. Many vendors’ sites do not state this information in their pricing. Some 50K or more systems could learn from the top low cost systems on some things. E-Learning 24/7.

Student, Teacher and Parent portals – It goes without saying on the student and teacher portals. As such, do folks really want parents to have their own portal? Integrate with SIS (Student information system) or alike. Most systems in the education space are still strongly focused on synchronous based learning. SaaS – I would prefer a vendor who offers SaaS only and not a SaaS or client hosted or G-D forbid client hosted only option.

Three months ago, only a few systems had either integrated for no additional charge or for additional fees, a talent management/performance management feature set. There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules.
