Open Source Web Conferencing Solutions – FREE

eLearning 24-7

I have a real issue with vendors who charge extra – via a license with their “partner&# or otherwise for a web conferencing – and thus ability to offer webinars, in their solution. Hence: Below are products that are either open source free or free or free with limited functionality. Open Meetings - based on Google code. Bosco’s Screen Share - just a screen share program, open source.

Halftime! LMS trends though July

eLearning 24-7

If your system on your own servers goes down or has bandwidth issues, you are in some minor doo doo, especially when your end users come complaining to the person in charge of training. When you need a fix, then the LMS vendor must work with you either remote to solve it or if it is big nasty fix, go on site. SaaS and LMS vendors. Even one time open source systems are starting to offer hosting for an additional cost. E-Learning 24/7.

E-Learning Takeaways

eLearning 24-7

For the rest of us, it isn’t, unless you see the latest takeaways as examples of what is to come or more importantly what hasn’t – which is really a could be doomsday to many vendors – unless they wake up! In my newest directory, I have 138 vendors. 37 support m-learning. 4 desktop authoring tool vendors work with Windows 8. Articulate has told me that they have an issue with Windows 8 for both Storyline and Studio, but are working on fixing it.

Review of ASTD International Trade Expo

eLearning 24-7

Lots of vendors, lots of potential. There were vendors that had nice LMSs and cool features. It just wasn’t me thinking this, I heard it from attendees and even other vendors who were trolling the floor. E-Learning has been minimal. I would estimate that there was a 60-40 split, still instructor led driven, but even a significant number of the ILT vendors were offering subsets or capabilities to turn their ILT into online via webinars or online courses.

E-Learning Screen recording and video solutions – Should b simple, so why isn’t it?

eLearning 24-7

There are more vendors who do not offer the ability to post – i.e. add audio afterwards it is quite amazing. Again, simple and yet again arguably with many vendors difficult to do. There are dozens of free audio plugins available on the net, so why aren’t screen capturing/recording vendors offering the ability for the end user to add them? Another issue I have with many vendors who offer effects – again, I like that – is that they fail to mention.

Evolving the E-Learning Experience for the 21st Century

eLearning 24-7

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. A greater number of people, worldwide are using SaaS then ever before, mobile products, tablets – especially the iPad – is growing at a feverish pace, people are using online storage, beyond just placing photos and media, and open source is continuing expansion. Product Review: Totara

eLearning 24-7

Vendors in this space include Docebo, eFront, Litmos and of course Totara. My Learning tab – shows alerts, recent learning, upcoming events. Graphical progress bar – basically less text or funky icons that only the vendor knows what is – example, a recall one vendor using a floppy disk to represent an online course. My Learning. Recent Learning – Course title, progress bar. Learning Plans. E-Learning 24/7.

#25 to #11 LMSs of 2012

eLearning 24-7

It is the holiday season and for those who see me as the grinch (okay a few vendors do, but I digress) here is a special post. Next week, 12-12-12, will be #10 to #1 learning management systems for 2012. New features include m-learning on the iPad with native app (no on/off synch), integrates with Yammer, themes, custom URL, assessment tool, the authoring tool is the key component, help and feedback tab. Video learning platforms. 20 Saba Learning Suite.

What’s hurting the LMS market

eLearning 24-7

Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. While this is a great concept for party decorations, it is not for a learning platform. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. . True, people are selecting open source systems, and for the majority of them, it is Moodle.

Times are changing – trends in the content authoring tool market

eLearning 24-7

You work online via the servers of your vendor. I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Despite the overwhelmingly number of vendors who have a “desktop only&# solution, based on what I am seeing- a result of new feature sets – this will change. This eliminates that issue. Mobile Learning. Hmm, oh yeah mobile learning.

The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

eLearning 24-7

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. This will become one of the biggest features in 2012 – especially with people wanting to create simulations without being an e-learning developer. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Over 98% of the LMS/LCMS/learning platform have at least one compliance standard, so why use a RCAT that doesn’t?

Latest E-Learning Trends – Some good, some bad

eLearning 24-7

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. This leads to the bigger issue. One vendor is months behind their release schedule. Another vendor is suffering Q/A issues.

Social Media and Social Learning – Where R We now?

eLearning 24-7

You have probably been bombarded with lots of social learning surveys over the past few weeks. Because without it, you cannot have social learning. In order for social learning to exist you need to have the following: social media plus e-learning. And, let us clear up another point: social learning is not just social networking. For fun, they toss in YouTube and say – look we know what social learning is for the masses. Vendor Section.

Award for all awards

eLearning 24-7

Granted it does not include bloggers (I hand them out- more on that in a sec) or believe it or not – other vendors, but it is a nice list nevertheless. Nothing wrong with that, mind you, after all when a company or vendor wins such an award it makes for great advertising and marketing. There are a couple of ways that a firm, company, vendor or individual can win an award, depending on the organization that is selecting winners. E-Learning 24/7 Approach.

Top 10 LMS/LCMS Trends and Forecasts

eLearning 24-7

The trends apply to both LMS/LCMS vendors. Extended Enterprise - Vendors are expanding into the wholesaler/reseller/affiliates/sales agent sector with their solutions. The note of interest is that it is occurring with all size of vendors, albeit the charge is being led by mid size vendors. Not all of the big dog vendors have entered this space, despite it being a huge revenue opportunity. and European vendors interestingly enough, do not follow suit.

User Friendly or Hype?

eLearning 24-7

The number one reason people leave their current system or purchase a different e-learning product? If I am a potential customer, I would expect nothing less to come out of the vendor’s mouth on their product and user friendliness. I have seen over 150 systems, 80 plus authoring tools, dozens of web conferencing products, mobile learning, quiz assessment tools, CMSs and learning portals, and not everyone of them meets those two statements. E-Learning 24/7.

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

eLearning 24-7

As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit. This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. Templates with some learning objects? A robust learning solution of multiple capabilities and outputs? It was difficult to say the least and learning it wasn’t much easier. Open Source Free Content Authoring Tools. This is a big issue.

Product Review: GeoLearning GeoMaestro

eLearning 24-7

Social Learning standard features – Lame. Social Learning add on module – Not a lot for what you get at an additional cost. One of the biggest challenges and common problem in the LMS/LCMS space is navigation and ease of use issues when it comes to the what the learner sees. It is truly amazing on how vendors seem to think lots of stuff on the page, is the way to go and navigation is just a requirement. With the GeoMaestro, this issue is eliminated.

LMS Customization

eLearning 24-7

Ask and see what can be done by the vendor – Customize it! Plus many vendors will include special “customized&# options for you – and then tell you what they are – during your discussions or upon your final negotiations. Some vendors will charge you per customization. Yes I can Do it OR Maybe not… Depending on what you are seeking in a customization, some vendors will tell you that it is either doable or not. Open Source LMSs.

LMS True or False

eLearning 24-7

The Big Dog Learning Management Systems are the best in the market – FALSE. My Learning Management System features learning paths, group employees by department/unit/division, add/delete employees, etc. However, something not all vendors offer -AND THEY SHOULD – deleting the employee and their info., Trust me the accident issue occurs, and right before you scream into the night, wouldn’t it be nice to know someone has your back?

If you have neither and are stuck in a contract that lasts more than 1 year, contact your vendor – your sales person to be exact and let them know that you want to leave your contract at the end of the year for that contract (i.e. You can easily move it into the other LMS, by simply re-packaging it with its wrapper - via your rapid e-learning tool solution. Video and LMSs – Why changes will need to be made in 2014

eLearning 24-7

With 2014 already in play, it is time for many LMS vendors to awaken by the trumpets playing the background – you might think it is Muzak, but no it’s trumpets. In 2014, I believe it will be the year of video for consumers in e-learning, specifically with content and as a one off on that – in the LMS. Some vendors already have this in place, the vast majority do not. . One vendor right off the bat is Unicorn Training. E-Learning 24/7.

Bamboozled

eLearning 24-7

It happened with a vendor that I was quite impressed with several months back. Everything is turned on in your demo, but the vendor fails to mention during its presentation that some of that functionality is not included in the product you are looking at. The authoring tool stated that courses published for mobile would work without issue, only for you to find out, that wasn’t the case. How am I getting bamboozled with an LMS vendor. E-Learning 24/7.
