State of the LMS 2012

eLearning 24-7

For the past month, I have been conducting a survey on learning platforms and specifically learning management systems. . The data shows that what many vendors assume end users want is far from accurate. Too many vendors are focusing on talent/performance management as the next feature/component in their systems. Do you have a LMS/LCMS/Learning Platform. Today, however more and more learning management systems are bringing into content management features, inc.

What’s hurting the LMS market

eLearning 24-7

Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. While this is a great concept for party decorations, it is not for a learning platform. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. . Yet, many vendors are doing exactly that. A huge problem in the space.

LMS Stories – Fantasy or Reality?

eLearning 24-7

Dragons and knights aren’t heading down the e-learning path. As I have noted numerous times, if you listen to vendors, everyone loves their system, they have retention rates in the plus 90%, yet, somehow the number one thing they hear is that people are looking for a new system, they are unhappy with their current system. If everyone is content with your system, and there are 450-500 vendors out there, then how is it, people are leaving? E-Learning 24/7.

Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

eLearning 24-7

If you are like the thousands of other people exploring the purchase of a learning management system, the key to success is asking the right questions. . For people who are working on certification, does your system provide e-mail reminders to end users whose certification is near expiration and thus they need to go into the system and complete it? What about e-mail reminders for the following (time frame) to renew? Go directly to the 3rd party vendor whose courses they are.

APIs and Mashups r ur new ABCs for E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

Unfortunately, too many vendors in the e-learning space have failed to see the power and potential of this capability, and have decided to ignore them. However there are vendors who sell their API solution wrapped in a piece of software. SCORM Player communicating with your vendor’s solution, for example, if you were creating your own LMS and Rapid Intake’s rapid e-learning authoring tool, it includes a SCORM Player API. No problem.

LMS vendors: R u hearing us?

eLearning 24-7

LMS Vendors. 30% vendors offer at least one type of social media – from my latest LMS directory. Dozens of LMS vendors, had typos on their web pages, zero screens of the system, links that went nowhere and two kicked up my Firewall warning of possible privacy collection and one had a Trojan Horse (I use a hardcore firewall and A/V). Over 90% of LMS vendors had their sites available only in English; so the potential customer could not view it in any other language.

Evolving the E-Learning Experience for the 21st Century

eLearning 24-7

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. E-Mail. The growing number of businesses leaving Microsoft Outlook to Internet e-mail is amazing. I see this as one of the most important features for any learning management system, open source or commercial. Innovation drives the market (regardless if it is e-learning or not).

Latest E-Learning Trends – Some good, some bad

eLearning 24-7

I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success.

User Friendly or Hype?

eLearning 24-7

The number one reason people leave their current system or purchase a different e-learning product? If I am a potential customer, I would expect nothing less to come out of the vendor’s mouth on their product and user friendliness. I have seen over 150 systems, 80 plus authoring tools, dozens of web conferencing products, mobile learning, quiz assessment tools, CMSs and learning portals, and not everyone of them meets those two statements.

Customer Complaints, How to Avoid the Traps

eLearning 24-7

When it comes to the e-learning market, specifically the LMS space (and you can toss in LCMS, CMS, Learning Portals as well), there are a lot of traps that customers fall into and can’t get out. Sometimes it is a result of the vendor, other times it is a failure of due diligence on the part of the soon to be customer. The vendor’s salesperson tells you want you want to hear. E-mail within 24 hours or less. any E-Learning product.

The Revolution is Coming: Consumer Tablets and E-Learning

eLearning 24-7

E-Learning and all forms within are normally taken via your desktop computer and either hitting your company’s server with your browser or going to a hosted LMS vendor’s solution. If you wanted to work on creating content, for many people, the route would be and still is creating courses via a desktop based rapid e-learning authoring tool, or via your LMS/LCMS vendor’s tool (hosted or not) or via Dreamweaver or some other type of solution.
