Your end users make up that mass, and a statement I hear often is that people aren’t staying in the systems to fully benefit from it. The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services. It was a myth.

That said, why is this happening: A significant (over 90%) of vendors are holding off this year and at least part of next year from optimizing their solution to the iPad. While I cannot say who they are, there are a couple LMS vendors that are ripe for acquisition, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see them in new hands by Q2 2011.

More of a surprise is that with the exception of 6 web conferencing vendors, who have apps specifically for the iPad/iPad2 market, you can count on one hand the number of LMS/LCMS vendors that offer the same thing. So, if that is case, why do people who have a system rank it as average to poor, more than rating it as good to excellent?

Dozens of LMS vendors, had typos on their web pages, zero screens of the system, links that went nowhere and two kicked up my Firewall warning of possible privacy collection and one had a Trojan Horse (I use a hardcore firewall and A/V). The ones who may not are those who identify themselves as “Training mgt systems and alike” – because they are really focused on the course authoring tool and are not a LMS in the true sense of the word. Two years ago, lots of LMS vendors were saying their systems were browser agnostic. Two years ago, there were LMS vendors systems who did not work on Chrome.

Move forward – not at the speed which you want because it takes time to learn TinCan, make sure it works and then implement it into their system. When a system offers performance management or talent management features (which IMO is now the same) two spins occur. It is included in the system at no charge.
