As you all know, I monitor the entire e-learning industry and with that comes out some interesting trends. MOOCs are growing at a continued pace, but they still have problems answering some basic questions. One vendor is focused only on SaaS products including social media. E-Learning 24/7.

There are enough vendors who are not going into the widget space, but are enabling the integration possibilities of APIs, which are really offers a powerhouse potential (a future emerging technology topic). Forecast: More vendors offering the integration capability of APIs. Linkedin tied into Twitter is an example of APIs.

Built in video chat and notifications that can be sent not only by SMS but also through Facebook just add real value.

Ask your fellow colleagues – via Linkedin, Quora, etc. The minus: vendors come out of the woodwork to tell you their system meets those needs. Scope out Linkedin, and other social media channels. People in the booth that actually know the product inside and out – I’m surprised on how this continues to be a problem at a lot of e-learning shows; some companies stock their booths with people who are very nice, but really do not have any knowledge on the product, beyond what they read on the product sheet they are handing you.

The problem with this trend is that it forces learners to do a checklist each day in the guise of boosting retention. I have those every weekend, so why as an adult learner do I want it as a benefit to learning? Another one on the rise for LMS vendors and honestly, e-learning vendors as a whole.
