The partner approach works this way: vendor A integrates Vendor B’s solution into their product. Some times, it is nothing more than a link – hidden from the end user – the screen shows a popup or goes to the “page” but in reality the end user is now in the other vendor’s solution. The problem though is it is not throughout the entire system, rather it is in a few areas. While the learning cloud and extended enterprise cloud are purchased by folks, I still see the platform – assuming you get all the modules as a HCM. There is nothing like interaction.

SumTotal is calling their product a Human Capital Management system. Sure, they offer a separate LMS called SumTotal Maestro, but their TM has surprisingly (not really) been morphed into a HCM, will others follow? Oh wait, others were starting the trend. I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success.

Every year, I identify five trends that I am seeing in the industry as a whole, and forecast on where they will be heading throughout the year. They involved talent management, “hello and goodbye” with vendors, social learning, upswing in mobile learning, new feature sets in the authoring tool space, flat lining in web conferencing and standalone platforms. What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. Each one of these features could be implemented into systems in six months or less. Authoring Tool Market – What I am seeing

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. If you are an e-learning developer or instructional designer this has always been a favorite feature of authoring tools. In just the past month, I have seen quite a few vendors add this capability in their product – and for the most part they are all RCAT products. Well some vendors have more than 15 come with their product. One vendor has a gaming raceway for quizzes.

Well, a lot has been happening in the past three months, from SaaS driven to talent management to course authoring to name changes and everything in between. Without further adieu, Talent Management/Performance Management (TM/PM). Three months ago, only a few systems had either integrated for no additional charge or for additional fees, a talent management/performance management feature set. to the expo vendors who forgot to bring any type of product example to the show – this event will go down in history! Photo ID required when you got your badge, especially when you had your e-mail with you and their bar scan – which didn’t work me and apparently more than a few others. An additional fee of $700 per day for vendors who wanted to use Wi-Fi, which some vendors found to be spotty at best. Congrats it’s a five pound baby LMS.

Recently, I conducted an emerging technology survey related to e-learning and the results show that end users are utilizing technology more then ever before and are seeking product features that LMS and content authoring tools, do not offer at this current time. Lots of vendors, lots of potential. There were vendors that had nice LMSs and cool features. It just wasn’t me thinking this, I heard it from attendees and even other vendors who were trolling the floor. E-Learning has been minimal. I would estimate that there was a 60-40 split, still instructor led driven, but even a significant number of the ILT vendors were offering subsets or capabilities to turn their ILT into online via webinars or online courses.
