A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

Mobile Learning. LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Sadly though many still are in the dark on true mobile learning – i.e. not accessing their platform via a mobile web browser. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Those who aren’t are either offering native apps with online/offline synch or performing the shell game via the mobile web browser and calling it mobile learning.

When you need a fix, then the LMS vendor must work with you either remote to solve it or if it is big nasty fix, go on site. SaaS and LMS vendors. Even one time open source systems are starting to offer hosting for an additional cost. Mind you, there is nothing wrong with doing so, and there are some nice advantages to it – mainly one stop shop, but if you are a LMS vendor who does not have an authoring tool built-in, it will not cause your demise.

What’s hurting the LMS market

Make no mistake, there are plenty of vendors out there who believe in the concept of focusing on features and forgetting about usability, under the guise that people would rather have lots of cool blinky things rather than usability. While this is a great concept for party decorations, it is not for a learning platform. There are a plethora of vendors out there, with blinders on. . Yet, many vendors are doing exactly that. I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Despite the overwhelmingly number of vendors who have a “desktop only&# solution, based on what I am seeing- a result of new feature sets – this will change. Mobile Learning. I mean ever&# , from a senior executive at a mid to large size vendor that has been in the market for several years. Across the board, a large number of vendors (from small to large) saw increases in their quarter numbers. Especially, when vendors released their 2010 final numbers and saw big increases from the previous year. A trend that is happening in the LMS market more so than in the other e-learning markets, is the failure to follow their path of success.

It happened with a vendor that I was quite impressed with several months back. Everything is turned on in your demo, but the vendor fails to mention during its presentation that some of that functionality is not included in the product you are looking at. E-Learning vendors offer training or tell you they have robust training, you find out it is PDF guides with an accompanying video. How am I getting bamboozled with an LMS vendor. E-Learning 24/7.
