While some view themselves as “social learning&# savvy, incorporating various components, others seem to see themselves as just sitting on the sidelines. While there are a couple of vendors out there who have incorporated e-mail that can go to outside to people, rather than just within the learning management product, the overall space isn’t doing it. I see this as one of the most important features for any learning management system, open source or commercial.

(No reason, I just love saying that) Mzinga shows up with a true social learning authoring tool. A few vendors say “social learning” but it is often far from it. Task management. Social tags, RSS, gaming activities. Lingo – They call it translation management software.

Mobile and Social. Social on the other hand is a hit or miss. So-called training management systems are not LMSs nor should be confused as such – these systems are often very low cost, but their main component is an authoring tool or in one case of a vendor – their assessment tool.
