Back again to bring this first in a series of rankings for the top ten learning management systems for 2013. Vendors can move up, down or out of the rankings – after all it is on-going. I’m not a lead gen for the vendors listed – rather the goal is to provide you with vendors that meet numerous criteria including UI, features, support/service, mobile, feedback from current and past clients and future game plans. Support of the iPad, thus mobile learning.

However, in the past week, I have received over 500 e-mails from readers requesting a list of the top twenty (rather than top then). No reason, I just love saying that) Mzinga shows up with a true social learning authoring tool. A few vendors say “social learning” but it is often far from it. I’m always amazed at some of the names vendors come up with for authoring tools. and customized player. 1st vendor IMO to truly have HTML5 output.

Evolving the E-Learning Experience for the 21st Century

eLearning 24-7

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. E-Mail. The growing number of businesses leaving Microsoft Outlook to Internet e-mail is amazing. I see this as one of the most important features for any learning management system, open source or commercial. Social learning takes on a whole new meaning.

It was the savior to mobile learning. Now, you can do all these amazing things, but it’s real strength was for collaborative learning. Social learning. Add to the learning experience. At least one tablet vendor is launching a 3D version, although you have to wear glasses. At one point, Microsoft was strongly against anyone hacking their Kinect device. You can remotely control your music & video players. E-Learning 24/7.

One Step Behind

Back in the day, a punk rock group called Madness released a wonderful tune called, “ One Step Beyond “, sadily if you were to look at the state of the e-learning industry as a whole today, perhaps the song should have been called, “One Step Behind&#. A LMS that came with a e-commerce, a chat room, discussion boards, front end look that did not appear to a be a LMS, library, bookstore (capability), art gallery (I used it for sponsorship purposes).

Rapid Content Authoring Tools: Market, Mayhem and Reality

eLearning 24-7

As the evolution of e-learning continues, the rapid content authoring tools (RCAT) market follows suit. This is a growing market with new vendors showing up, but at the same time, others disappearing. Microsoft Word converted to Flash? Templates with some learning objects? A robust learning solution of multiple capabilities and outputs? It was difficult to say the least and learning it wasn’t much easier. 43 Vendors do not have one.

Every month, I will providing an emerging technology that I believe will be a game changer in the e-learning industry. I call it ELGC (E-learning game changer). Improves video and audio quality – extensively – thus your Social Learning/Social Media experience has just increased infinitely; Vivemo, Blip.tv and YouTube (beta) are already offering videos in HTML5 players. Oh, e-readers – sure down the pipeline. E-Learning 24/7.

Something is Going on Down there in the LMS Market

LMS Vendors and Tablets Update. That said, why is this happening: A significant (over 90%) of vendors are holding off this year and at least part of next year from optimizing their solution to the iPad. Over 98% do not have a true HTML5 player in their system that can run a 100% pure HTML5 course – which by the way, has nothing to do with the browser agnostic pitch they make about their system being optimized for the iPad. Hopefully, every vendor will return back 100%.

LMS dot.com 3.0?

I like Grovo as a product, but their pitch as the original micro-learning platform (read in one press release) is a twist on reality – great marketing, but really? This is because any vendor/platform/system could provide micro-learning since the start of the LMS space in the late 90’s. I told them, vendors were offering this in 2000. Learning Technology Group paying what amounts to nearly 70 million dollars for Net Dimensions is stunning.
