The LMS/LCMS/Learning Portal market continues to be strong. In my latest directory, 393 LMS vendors – global, of which 34 or so are open source systems. Folding up shop and switching to a new market: Talent/Performance Management, new product lines not tied to e-learning, services. It was a myth.

A lot of great products out there this year, new updates and latest versions; new companies, new services and just some real innovation. I include Learning Portals, LCMSs, as part of the mix. E-commerce is standard, multi-tenet off the main system, with each distributor/wholesaler/reseller/sales agent, etc.

Customer Service. For some vendors the words are just words, not actually making it happen, and when they do, many charge for the privilege of you contacting them. One of the most irritating things I see in the market, is when a feature or service that is commonly free turns into a fee based. Especially, when it can mislead end users, who maybe unaware that the feature or service is not needed. I have seen this with a couple of vendors and thought to myself, are they kidding me?

Sales – 25.7%. rather then going through the LMS vendor. I have found I can land a better price then using the quick way via the LMS vendor. The vendor is taking a percentile of the sales of the courses, so it makes sense to go direct and cut out the middleman. Product – 54.2%. Other – 2%.
