I shot off the usual reasons, the benefits, the gains and then found myself expanding into the next possibilities of where a system and content authoring tool had to go. For vendors, they could make it happen and generate revenue. Even with slideshare, you can actually post e-books and other documents, so it follows suit in a system.

Each one of these features could be implemented into systems in six months or less. Your end users make up that mass, and a statement I hear often is that people aren’t staying in the systems to fully benefit from it. Manually sets bandwidth limits, eliminating hog of your system resources. These features can change that.

The best system for the education market is Moodle. Moodle can be a worthwhile system but it requires heavy customization, dedicated IT person who has Moodle skill sets (ideal), in-house support (because when end users can’t figure it out – they will come calling YOU) and costs that many folks fail to realize.

While UI on the front and back end of a system continues to be all over the place – from generally awful to very nice – regardless of the price point, its the features that stand out (or in some cases -you should stand clear off) in the space. Learning Management Systems – I expect to see more next year, but this year was solid. SumTotal is coming out with a new UI for their learning module in August. I can tell you it is way better than their current learning UI. Speaking of UIs, I still cannot believe the number of vendors whose interfaces look dated.

That said, why is this happening: A significant (over 90%) of vendors are holding off this year and at least part of next year from optimizing their solution to the iPad. While I cannot say who they are, there are a couple LMS vendors that are ripe for acquisition, and it wouldn’t be a shock to see them in new hands by Q2 2011.

More of a surprise is that with the exception of 6 web conferencing vendors, who have apps specifically for the iPad/iPad2 market, you can count on one hand the number of LMS/LCMS vendors that offer the same thing. Three months ago, only a few systems had either integrated for no additional charge or for additional fees, a talent management/performance management feature set. Everyone loves my system. As I have noted numerous times, if you listen to vendors, everyone loves their system, they have retention rates in the plus 90%, yet, somehow the number one thing they hear is that people are looking for a new system, they are unhappy with their current system.
