LMS/LCMS vendors love to tell you who there clients are or better yet show you a list of clients, without really stating if they still use them. They argue that if it is on the latter, it is not “mobile&# learning. E-Learning 24/7. I attended a seminar on this topic and frankly it was very convincing.

This year, I estimated a 55/60% e-learning, including some ILT vendors offering some type of e-learning component. . In all the years I have attended and have known about ATD (formally ASTD), this year is by far the most in terms of e-learning vendors, especially those in the LMS space.

Innovation abounded and the push to focus on the “PPT to Flash&# angle continued to shine. iPod, mobile phones, YouTube, message boards, e-mail. Import and convert PPT to the web, add rich media. The downside to training management products is the inability to upload any other 3rd party authoring tool or courses from an off the shelf vendor. Yeah, you can upload word docs, PPT, etc. – but not a course from say Articulate or any of the other tools. The biggest name in the space is Mindflash.com.

Vendors who offer the ability to upload your PowerPoint, word docs, slides, etc. So you can have your PPT or whatever docs and upload them into the presentation while you are taking. Upload your PPT or docs or whatever ahead of time. sadly do not follow one universal approach. Upload in real time, on the fly.

The two biggest negatives IMO, is that it just isn’t robust enough for e-learning developers and its whole focus on PPT into converting to a course doesn’t help. Sure he blasted through it, but with this product you can’t. Yeah, people love it. Yeah people buy it.

Next to the demo, is the Vendor’s name, web link and they can have an e-mail connect to a general info box or directly to a salesperson. Vendors cannot include a PPT or sales pitch in their demo, it has to be 100% pure product.

They fail to even clearly show their product, let alone present the product sans the standard PPT intro that comes with “learn more” about the solution. You can try to figure out about the product via the company’s web site, but many sites honestly are beyond awful. Talk, Talk (and no, not the band ).

Under course is a PPT 2010 QRC, yet under the categories section, you see “downloadable reference” Guess what? While it is true that categories contains everything and thus a search can be done with a click here or there, the same can occur in courses – as the above example illustrates. The QRC is visible in there too.

An alarming rate of “get the content up now, ASAP&# regardless of what it looks like, instructional design is typically tossed out the window, especially when the ID, CD or whomever is tasked to create is handed a stream of documents in Word or PPT or some other form. Cannot move slides in the arrange mode – i.e. once you upload the PPT with the slide order, you cannot move say slide #9 to spot #4, rather you have to do this in PPT and then re-upload. Inability to have course be non-linear when live; it stays linear (another typical ILT feature), hint: WBT’s power is non-linear.
