A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

Mobile Learning. LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Sadly though many still are in the dark on true mobile learning – i.e. not accessing their platform via a mobile web browser. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Those who aren’t are either offering native apps with online/offline synch or performing the shell game via the mobile web browser and calling it mobile learning.

Y R Some Vendors confused about e-learning?

Are there vendors in the e-learning space who lack basic understanding around e-learning? Lastly, if the vendors, organizations and firms whose whole background, expertise and existence is tied to e-learning and they themselves are not fully understanding it, does this bode well for the industry as a whole? (I’ll E-Learning is E-Learning and not some magical dust. Hello, it fits under e-learning.

Looking into everything that is e-learning and I’ve seen a lot. Social Learning Platform. Just last week, I saw the best social learning platform ever. Best of all, even if you choose not to use it, the product is available to the public as a new social media site. From a social learning standpoint. Can be also a standalone and/or interfaced with any learning management system or learning platform. Learning Management Systems.

LMS Ecosystems – The next big thing

When you think of a learning management system you immediately focus on the features, ease of use (ideally) and more importantly how it ties directly to what you want to do in the short and long term as related to learning or learning/performance management. Maybe you see it as a component within a blended learning environment. Because the one stop shops are now appearing in learning management systems, for the better. These are my favorite sites.

Features that are must haves in any LMS

Learning environment. Assign x users to one group, assign “y” to another group – with each group having different courses, learning content, etc. The problem though is what should be universal standards – and for the vast majority are – there are still learning management systems that just fail to grasp that concept. Super Bonus – Great for retail locations where stores may not have e-mail, SMS removes that. Learning Environment.

The grades are in for Education focused LMSs

Combination of synchronous and asynchronous features. Most systems in the education space are still strongly focused on synchronous based learning. SaaS – I would prefer a vendor who offers SaaS only and not a SaaS or client hosted or G-D forbid client hosted only option. Example of Primary: Active directory, assessment tool, social learning features and SCORM are all bonuses. Its a hybrid of a learning platform, learning exchange and social collaboration.

Social Learning – What’s the Point? Time to turn the tables on the naysayers

That is what one senior exec said to me, the other day when it came to social learning. For vendors, they could make it happen and generate revenue. Even with slideshare, you can actually post e-books and other documents, so it follows suit in a system. Expand it, so that e-books, documents, audio files can be viewed on e-book readers, if it is ePub (the most used format, and recognized with every e-reader, sans Kindle) it will work. Nice selection of vendors – in general. More goodies then in the past, but the vendor with the awesome monkeys – it was nearly impossible to get one – you had a better chance of allowing them to stick leeches on you, then getting one – what’s the point of marketing – if the product you want to show – yours – isn’t walking the floor with folks. Less vendors scanning people’s ID badges, which I found interesting.

I knew that its core audience would be instructional designers and e-learning developers. . From products that ranged from the latest versions of RCATs to new vendors in the space, including text to speech. . Not so much, from what I saw – some of the tools were underwhelming (granted some were quite impressive), but rather how the vendors themselves perceived where the market is going and what customers want in their authoring tools. One Step Behind

Back in the day, a punk rock group called Madness released a wonderful tune called, “ One Step Beyond “, sadily if you were to look at the state of the e-learning industry as a whole today, perhaps the song should have been called, “One Step Behind&#. A LMS that came with a e-commerce, a chat room, discussion boards, front end look that did not appear to a be a LMS, library, bookstore (capability), art gallery (I used it for sponsorship purposes).

Unfortunately, too many vendors in the e-learning space have failed to see the power and potential of this capability, and have decided to ignore them. However there are vendors who sell their API solution wrapped in a piece of software. SCORM Player communicating with your vendor’s solution, for example, if you were creating your own LMS and Rapid Intake’s rapid e-learning authoring tool, it includes a SCORM Player API.
