I’ll be the first to admit, that I was not a big fan of the previous versions of the Plateau system. A major, major improvement from previous versions, but I digress. This is Plateau’s social learning component, and it reminds me of a cross between a COP (Community of Practice) with some social learning functionality.

You can use either your own 3rd party content authoring tool and upload it into the “Cloud&# and then wherever you are, output either to your LMS, or onto Moodle or even WordPress (they have a plug in for that) OR place the course in Facebook or nearly any solution that accepts APIs. They do offer a higher education version, but this is all about K-12. This has always been a personal fav of mine, and its primary version K-6 is fantastic. Output to Facebook. I guess some folks believe that everyone wants to take courses in Facebook. That everyone uses Facebook, you know the 20 something crowd. Reality: StumbleUpon generated more traffic in the last two quarters then Facebook. Many companies ban access to social media sites, especially Facebook.

Video goes in and out with the audio – They explain it has to do with the latest version of Flash, but how about coming up with an alternative. Personally, dump this feature and offer some social media components right there on the screen. Maybe send link to Linkedin or Twitter or Facebook or whatever. Bottom Line.

I’ve also learned firsthand, how to make it work in any vertical and any industry. Learning Management Systems. Mobile learning platforms. Social learning platforms. I prefer 3rd party authoring tools that use SCORM (in whatever version) as long as it matches my LMS. Without just jumping around.

As we know, the majority of people who access e-learning content (inc. mobile and social) is out of the workplace. I believe that the reason mobile learning has and continues to be the next big thing, is directly tied to tablets (sorry smartphones). Especially when you add social learning to it.

A caveat: You need to make sure that your new system supports the SCORM version you are using with your 3rd party content authoring tool. What if you used your vendor’s content authoring tool?
