Questions to Ask Ur Prospective LMS Vendor

If you are like the thousands of other people exploring the purchase of a learning management system, the key to success is asking the right questions. . Below are some standard questions to ask, but are in no particular order. What about PENS or some other compliance standard? Every LMS vendor should have a standard regarding response times, when they receive an inquiry via the internet. I know of one vendor who responds within 30 minutes of receiving an inquiry. A Look Back at E-Learning in 2012

Mobile Learning. LMSs – Finally vendors took notice. Sadly though many still are in the dark on true mobile learning – i.e. not accessing their platform via a mobile web browser. Authoring Tools – With only a small sample of vendors that are SaaS based, pickings are slim. Those who aren’t are either offering native apps with online/offline synch or performing the shell game via the mobile web browser and calling it mobile learning.

I love going to LMS sites and seeing a list of clients that the vendor lists. Especially the LMS vendors who also create custom content/development. That some vendors who provide a list of clients may not be clients of their LMS, rather they are current or past clients of custom course development. Yep, you read that right, and best or worst of all, they (vendor) never tells you, unless you inquiry. For the vendor to achieve success in the demo.

ASTDTK14 zoomed into Vegas last week with about 60 vendors (est.) On the expo side, and I know ASTD Events are going to disagree with me (err, they already have via Linkedin), I wasn’t overly impressed on the number of vendors’ booths. Authoring tools vendors – pickings were slim, Adobe was present, so was Allen Interactions (Zebra Zapps), but no Articulate? Mobile specific tools or m-learning spin tools – were not as extensive as I was expecting.

The biggest problem facing the industry in the past few years are the lack of course authoring tools for e-learning developers and instructional designers. elearning maker - another product form e-doceo; screenwriting, storyboards, media inserts, selection and moving of elements plus more; a beginner could use some of the features, but a developer has some additional capabilities and flexibilities.

Because the industry as a whole is a lemming, I expect more vendors to come on board. If you are an e-learning developer or instructional designer this has always been a favorite feature of authoring tools. In just the past month, I have seen quite a few vendors add this capability in their product – and for the most part they are all RCAT products. Well some vendors have more than 15 come with their product. One vendor has a gaming raceway for quizzes.

You could also find some standards in every LMS (uh, not at the same time of getting gas for a nickel). These standards included such favorites as. Learning environment. Why are some vendors making it impossible? Why are some vendors treating you as a spy or something sinister when you just want to try out the product? You would think that with over 140 authoring tools on the market, vendors would want you to try out their product before dropping any type of cash. Some systems in this space include e-commerce at no additional charge. The standards – curriculum paths, reports, calendar, batch uploads, assign users to one group and they see X courses, while another group sees Y courses will appear in these systems, along with the most common features in any system. Simple look and feel is the standard. Many vendors’ sites do not state this information in their pricing. E-Learning 24/7.

This same contradiction is now happening in the e-learning world at a frightening pace. The people who suffer the most from this contradiction are the consumers and a vast majority of vendors. While mobile learning is moving at an incredible speed, faster than anticipated by some of my colleagues, it does not come without a cost. Regardless of whatever e-learning product you are using that states the ability to view and take assessments, courses, etc.

Articulate, Captivate and Lectora – Do they deserve your praise?

What I found was an extensive group of people hungry for anything e-learning. Hungry to learn as much as they could and hungry to see what was in the space. My sense of it all, was that regardless of the location the buzz is all e-learning. I wasn’t surprised on the e-learning excitement. It is easy to use and once you learn it, easy to push out content. I’m tired of telling people that it is better to buy 3rd party courses through you even though they can get a better deal by going straight to the 3rd party vendor. #5 I explicitly told HSwidget in an e-mail not to call me, but rather send me an e-mail. Then he sent me an e-mail asking that I call him. Three days later, I again followed up with an e-mail stating my particulars and that I prefer setting up demos via e-mail. E-Learning 24/7.

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. E-Mail. How to Sell a LMS

” Customer: We are seeking a system that offers curriculum paths, ability to group learners to take x course or courses, e-mail notification, blah blah. I would always tell them up front before jumping into what I was seeking, my knowledge of e-learning and systems, so we could move past that. Even if the person doesn’t know anything about e-learning and specifically a LMS, it does not mean they are not intelligent people. Vendors know this.

Selecting a LMS: Which one is the right one for you?

In the e-learning world, the size of the business is essential. Some vendors consider 300 or less, but the vast majority are 500 or less. Enterprise ( a term that some vendors use, others just say Large) 50,000 or more employees. Think “Big Whale” If a vendor lands this size of a client, it is like winning the lottery. There are hundreds of vendors who do not try for this space and that makes sense. Do not offer e-commerce.

The Latest: Rapid Content Authoring Tool Market

I am still surprised on how vendors who are offering assessment only tools are staying in the game. This will become one of the biggest features in 2012 – especially with people wanting to create simulations without being an e-learning developer. Some vendors push heavily on PPT, implying that a great WBT is really a PPT converted to Flash. Over 98% of the LMS/LCMS/learning platform have at least one compliance standard, so why use a RCAT that doesn’t?

You work online via the servers of your vendor. I had thought that this trend would be dying out, but it is amazing at the number of vendors who are entering the space and still focused on the desktop approach. Despite the overwhelmingly number of vendors who have a “desktop only&# solution, based on what I am seeing- a result of new feature sets – this will change. Mobile Learning. Hmm, oh yeah mobile learning. Becoming a standard in the industry.

Toss in SCORM 1.2/2004, add a few more standard features and make changes to some of the capabilities and this product will be competitive against some of its higher priced authoring tool brethren. So what makes a Lite LMS different from a Standard LMS? Less functionality and features than their standard counterparts, but these features may be “social learning&# , or “ability to tie a user to a course&# or “creating learning paths for each user&# or “assessment tools&# , etc. Analytics and thus reports are not as robust as some of the standard systems, typically lesser amount of reports than a standard system. There is a growing list of vendors, including small/mid size that are adding talent management components that match the Big Dog systems. A couple of vendors have added HRIS modules. It is interesting to note, that many of the vendors are targeting the SMB space, especially the small size (less than 500 employees) market. What is nice is there are still a significant number of vendors who have not added it. E-Learning 24/7.

They are similar to what you see in your standard LMS, course content, learning paths, reporting – but it is not as robust (which is fine for some end users). One vendor with 750 users, priced out at nearly 24K a year; another close to 11.5K – thus depends on users is a factor. If you are an e-learning vendor exploring the SBM do not take them lightly, a few are slowly entering my 2nd trend. Social Learning and M-Learning.
