Because those who were fortunate to attend the World of Learning Conference, everywhere they looked was a nugget of gold, especially those who used the dynamite technique of e-learning. While I am sure that occurred at WOLC, the ones I gazed at, which were presented by vendors, had no sales pitch whatsoever, rather it was all about a specific subject tied to e-learning. Heck, one vendor I know even landed a massive deal right there at the show.

What always stuns me are vendors who state they know what their learners want, but in reality have no clue, because they themselves do not see the technology and its usage among the masses. E-Mail. That is what one senior exec said to me, the other day when it came to social learning. For vendors, they could make it happen and generate revenue. For specific groups per se, they have the ability to work in real time, editing virtual, and then posting them. Even with slideshare, you can actually post e-books and other documents, so it follows suit in a system. Most e-readers enable the end user to listen to mp3s and view other documents. At least one tablet vendor is launching a 3D version, although you have to wear glasses. Flip the pages of your e-books as you read them. In the e-learning world, the size of the business is essential. Some vendors consider 300 or less, but the vast majority are 500 or less. Enterprise ( a term that some vendors use, others just say Large) 50,000 or more employees. Think “Big Whale” If a vendor lands this size of a client, it is like winning the lottery. There are hundreds of vendors who do not try for this space and that makes sense. It’s a small world or is it?

If you wanted to work on creating content, for many people, the route would be and still is creating courses via a desktop based rapid e-learning authoring tool, or via your LMS/LCMS vendor’s tool (hosted or not) or via Dreamweaver or some other type of solution.

I came into rapid e-learning from the world of Authorware and Flash where building courses took a lot of time and cost a lot more money. Although after talking to several vendors, irritation seemed to be a part of their response to me. Estimate 55% e-learning related content, including e-learning vendors and ILT vendors who added a “virtual training” component as part of their offerings. To me, many more LMS vendors than in the past, especially some newbies I’ve never seen attend the show. Expo vendor pick up in terms of leads and traffic.
