The gradebook module

eFront

News from the e-learning frontier Pages Home About Community Free e-Learning Resources Contribute to the e-Learning Community 7/23/2010 The gradebook module The brand new eFronts gradebook module combines results from online activities (tests, participation, projects) and offline activities (written tests, teacher judgment,) to produce grades for users. When combining the activities we can use different weights for different activities. The gradebook module uses a formula to convert scores for activities to an aggregated lesson score at a range from 1 and 100 - and subsequently to a grade (e.g, A, B, C, Fail, Pass) depending on how it is setup. Lets see a practical example. After installing the module we have to decide on how scores will be translated to grades. In the following picture you can see a typical grading setup. As a professor now we have to activate the gradebook module for lessons. Just go to the administration page of a lesson and make sure that the gradebook module is active. By selecting the gradebook we first have to decide about the elements that take part on the score computation. For all the columns that refer to an online activity we can fetch directly the data from the lesson. For offline activities we have to manually add the scores. An icon on the top of every column fetches the data from the related object. As soon we have completed fetching and adding scores we can use the "Compute Score/Grade" button to get the final results. Finally, we can decide if we want or not the results to be visible for the end-user. We can freely move from one to another gradebook in a convinient way. If a gradebook is published then the end-user can see and export it. We hope you will like the gradebook module. We tried to make it easy to setup and use! (Note 1: Dont forget that you need to download it from our modules page at: [link] ) (Note 2:For more information on this module you can check the wiki article as well located at: [link] ) Posted by Athanasios Papagelis at 3:58 AM Email This BlogThis! Free and Open Source Text to Speech Tools for e-Learning

eFront

News from the e-learning frontier Pages Home About Community Free e-Learning Resources Contribute to the e-Learning Community 1/16/2011 Free and Open Source Text to Speech Tools for e-Learning Open source software can be used as we wish, without long-term commitments and with a community of professionals that extend and support them. This post is a post of the series "Free e-Learning Resources" and I am going to talk about free and open source text-to-speech tools for e-Learning. Before I present you the list I would like to answer two important questions: 1) Why not use Human voice over? As a eLearning consultant I would prefer to use a human narration professional. However, you should consider the following factors: It is more expensive It needs more time It is difficult to maintain the training Few professional have the necessary skills It is difficult to update the eLearning course The pace is not steady It is difficult to maintain your organizations identity 2) If I use text why I need to use voice? For me it is unacceptable that eLearning organization create courses that they do not have voice. Come on guys are you serious! Are you familiar with the learning styles ? How an auditory learner will succeed in your eLearning course? Some people will say that not all computers have speakers or that the voice is annoying. You are going to invest in your employees but you do not have money for headphones! Is it difficult to lower the volume or turn it off? Text and voice are extremely important factors to an eLearning course. So, let see the list of the free and open source text-to-speech tools for e-Learning. => If you know a free or open source text-to-speech tool that is not included in the list I will highly appreciate if you write a comment with a link! Free and Open Source Text to Speech Tools for e-Learning View more presentations from Christopher Pappas. The MBROLA Project The aim of the MBROLA project, initiated by the TCTS Lab of the Faculté Polytechnique de Mons (Belgium), is to obtain a set of speech synthesizers for as many languages as possible, and provide them free for non-commercial applications. The Festival Speech Synthesis System Festival offers a general framework for building speech synthesis systems as well as including examples of various modules. As a whole it offers full text to speech through a number APIs: from shell level, though a Scheme command interpreter, as a C++ library, from Java, and an Emacs interface. Festival is multi-lingual (currently English (British and American), and Spanish) though English is the most advanced. The MARY MARY is an open-source, multilingual Text-to-Speech Synthesis platform written in Java. It was originally developed as a collaborative project of DFKIs Language Technology lab and the Institute of Phonetics at Saarland University and is now being maintained by DFKI. As of version 4.3, MARY TTS supports German, British and American English, Telugu, Turkish, and Russian; more languages are in preparation. MARY TTS comes with toolkits for quickly adding support for new languages and for building unit selection and HMM-based synthesis voices. YAKiToMe ! Free text to speech. Uses the worlds best text to speech (TTS) software. Upload documents, cut and paste text or link to feeds. Text reader converts text to speech automatically. Download audio and podcasts. Its fast and easy to use. Get started right away! No software to download or install. SpokenText SpokenText lets you easily convert text in to speech. Record (English, French, Spanish or German) PDF, Word, plain text, PowerPoint files, and web pages, and convert them to speech automatically. Create.mp3 or.m4b (Audio Book) recordings (in English, French, Spanish and German) of any text content on your computer or mobile phone. eSpeak eSpeak uses a "formant synthesis" method. This allows many languages to be provided in a small size. The speech is clear, and can be used at high speeds, but is not as natural or smooth as larger synthesizers which are based on human speech recordings. Google has integrated eSpeak, an open source software speech synthesizer for English and other languages, in its online translation service Google Translate. The move allow users of Google Translate to hear translations spoken out loud (text-to-speech) by clicking the speaker icon beside some translations. Praat Praat is a free scientific software program for the analysis of speech in phonetics. It has been designed and continuously developed by Paul Boersma and David Weenink of the University of Amsterdam. It can run on a wide range of operating systems, including various Unix versions, Mac and Microsoft Windows (95, 98, NT4, ME, 2000, XP, Vista). The program also supports speech synthesis, including articulatory synthesis. FreeTTS FreeTTS is a speech synthesis system written entirely in the JavaTM programming language. It is based upon Flite: a small run-time speech synthesis engine developed at Carnegie Mellon University. Flite is derived from the Festival Speech Synthesis System from the University of Edinburgh and the FestVox project from Carnegie Mellon University. Festvox The Festvox project aims to make the building of new synthetic voices more systemic and better documented, making it possible for anyone to build a new voice. Flite: a small, fast run time synthesis engine Flite (festival-lite) is a small, fast run-time synthesis engine developed at CMU and primarily designed for small embedded machines and/or large servers. Flite is designed as an alternative synthesis engine to Festival for voices built using the FestVox suite of voice building tools. The Epos Speech Synthesis System Epos is a language independent rule-driven Text-to-Speech (TTS) system primarily designed to serve as a research tool. Epos is (or tries to be) independent of the language processed, linguistic description method, and computing environment. by Christopher Pappas M.B.A., M.Ed. Building an advanced eFront theme using CSS3 elements

eFront

News from the e-learning frontier Pages Home About Community Free e-Learning Resources Contribute to the e-Learning Community 7/12/2010 Building an advanced eFront theme using CSS3 elements Although HTML5 and CSS3 are still under development ( [link] ) most current browsers support a reasonable portion of html5 and css3 elements (with the remarkable exception of IE 8 *) CSS3 introduces, among others, a way to create rounded boxes and add shadow for letters and boxes. Using just these 3 elements we can produce a high quality variation of an eFront theme with minimum changes and increased readability. Rounded corners Rounded corners produce a friendly look-and-feel for our page elements. Before CSS3 we would need to work with images or javascript to produce a round box effect. Actually, there are dozens of wide spread techniques to produce the round corner effect (for example, check [link] ) – which by its turn is a clear signal that there is no perfect solution. CSS3 introduces the border-radius element which comes to remedy this situation. In order to create a border effect on your themes just use the following css elements: -moz-border-radius: 3px; -webkit-border-radius: 3px Shaded letters and boxes Shaded letters improves the text readability and they are a nice touch especially for headers. The same way, shaded boxes offer an easy stylish element for your pages. In order to create shaded boxes use: -moz-box-shadow: 3px 3px 3px #888; -webkit-box-shadow: 3px 3px 3px #888; In order to crated shaded text use something like: text-shadow:1px 1px 1px #000000; The theme We started from the standard blue theme extending it to be simpler (by removing the background header and adopting a neutral white background color). We also opt to use a high-contrast red header for boxes that improves readability. A typical modified theme element that includes CSS3 attributes is as follows: table.pageLayout td.header #path { clear:left; padding-top:5px; padding-bottom:3px; -moz-box-shadow: 3px 3px 3px #888; //new css3 element -webkit-box-shadow: 3px 3px 3px #888; //new css3 element -moz-border-radius: 5px; //new css3 element -webkit-border-radius: 5px; //new css3 element background:url(./images/css_images/gradient.gif) repeat-x top; height:25px; border-top: 0px solid #1f3349; border-bottom: 0px solid #1f3349 } Below you can find several screenshots from the theme (as is rendered on FireFox 3.6) describing the design choices. Don’t forget to download the theme at the end of this post! Compatibility Rounded corners are supported by Firefox and Safari. Shaded letters are supported by Safari, Firefox and Opera. Shaded boxes are supported by Firefox and Safari. Our theme will work without issues on other browsers as well but without the additional styling elements we introduced. Download Download the theme! What a useful overview, Christopher!! Thank you for taking the time to create these meaty introductions and gather these introductory vids in one place! People keep asking me to do this and I've just been too busy to do a good job of it like you have here! I so appreciate you taking time to make this post. I'm going to link this post on my blog, too, and recommend it into the conversation I'm in on Amplify. (Have you found Amplify yet? You belong in that community!!) I particularly like the vid you found from Yugma because it makes a clear distinction between intermittent and persistent collaboration. While I've found Yugma to be a very useful tool for what the Yugma team likes to call "fluid collaboration," all the other apps you've highlighted in this post (as well as others) provide simple, useful, browser-based platforms for the same processes. The trick is understanding how to work with others fluidly and collaboratively. The issue isn't really which TOOLS we choose, though, it's the challenge of translating our expertise into everyday work processes of "fluid collaboration" with others. It's my experience that what's standing in our way as trainers, coaches, and consultants using these tools isn't the tool skills. It's the fact that those of us who are over 30 weren't trained to think about either work or learning as continuous processes of creating and nourishing a sense of shared meaning - and purpose - with others. Would love to hear your feedback: [link] November 1, 2010 1:05 PM Christoforos Online said. Hi Meri, Thank you for your constructive comment! You are more than welcome to link this post on your blog. I will very much appreciate if you mention this blog as a resource. Can you give me some more info concerning Amplify? I will write you constructive feedback as soon as possible. Have a wonderful day, @cpappas November 2, 2010 2:30 AM Meri said. Come to [link] and you'll see my personal page there, Christopher. Amplify is a community of bloggers and it's also a great platform for conversation around online content - including your own content. It makes it very simple to distribute your content to lots of social media and draw people from various audiences into one place to have conversation. If you scroll through my place there you may see a little about what I'm saying. And, if you'd like to have a quick Skype about this, I'd be happy to. Besides taking up "personal" residence there (in a very smart and active community) you can start Amplify groups. Another very interesting way to engage people simply around content. I like the results I'm able to create a Amplify a LOT better than Ning, for instance. November 2, 2010 11:52 AM Meri said. For instance, my repost of your blog here yesterday generated 53 views of your blog in a matter of a few hours on Amplify and it was rerecommended by my followers there several times already. I don't know how many views I sent you through my personal blog at [link] but I doubt I generated that much traffic yet. Amplify is a fabulous way to engage with smart people who care about what you care about in more than 140 characters. November 2, 2010 11:55 AM Christoforos Online said.
