The Relationship

The client first approached Learning Everest in 2021. They needed our services to convert an instructor-led training program with sensitive subject matter into an e-learning course.

They chose Learning Everest due to our quick delivery times, competitive pricing, and our high quality of work. Throughout the project, our team collaborated closely with the client to understand their needs, exchange inputs, and refine the delivery strategies used in the course.

The Client’s Requirement

The client availed our services to convert an instructor-led safety and awareness training program into a bespoke e-learning course so they could deliver it more easily to their employees across various office branches.

The aim of the course was to build skills and general situational awareness strategies among learners in the face of an active shooter incident.

Due to the very sensitive nature of the topic, the client had some highly specific requirements for the e-learning course. They wanted to avoid depictions of the following:

  • Firearms
  • Injury and blood
  • People in threatening or aggressive poses, unless absolutely necessary to the curriculum
  • Anything that would perpetuate harmful and misplaced stereotypes about certain groups or communities

However, due to the skill-based subject matter, depictions of human beings were not entirely avoidable, either. Thus, the visual aids for the course needed to be picked very deliberately and carefully.

The Solution

The e-learning course contained a mixture of strategies geared toward skill-building and situational awareness. It followed a structured learning format with a pre-defined learning pathway. This was essential so learners had proper context about statistical figures and the chances of such incidents happening before getting into the practical aspect of things.

Text-based screens with a contemporary and clean interface and background image headers were used for the theory slides. The skill-based sections used scenarios, branching, practical tips supplemented by images, real-life examples, and videos.

Instead of utilizing characters or people for scenarios, custom-illustrated silhouettes were brought in to make the people depicted in them appear as generic as possible. Additionally, these silhouettes were placed against a backdrop of internal office images. These images were also used in theory sections, timelines, and menu backgrounds to contextualize the learning for the target audience.

The course also had interactive drag-and-drop knowledge checks to reinforce the skills learners were being taught.

The client’s branding guidelines were strictly followed for greater harmony between all the customized elements.

Lastly, a voiceover was added to make the course more accessible and easier to consume.

The finished product aligned well with the client’s requirements and successfully imparted skills and strategies without being explicit.
