Gamification; gamified learning; serious games. Whatever term you prefer, games and elearning have something of a chequered history! Once the thing everyone was talking about, then something most people were only talking about (and not really doing), and more recently a bit of an abandoned bandwagon. But gamification in elearning is absolutely something you should care about because it taps into a fundamental aspect of human behaviour: motivation.

Trainers must not only support learning objectives, but also business goals. More often than not, our stakeholders include our learners’ managers. Their involvement in our initiatives impact the outcomes we see. Because of this, it’s important that you choose the right analytics when presenting your program to management. The data available to LMS users is expansive and highly-detailed, so the best analytics-based presentations always have a game-plan, that makes sure only the most persuasive and relevant data is used.

This is the last installment of my series on instructional design careers. Links to the rest of the series are at the end of this post. Previously, I’ve talked about the skills instructional designers need and how to get into the field of ID. In this post, I talk about determining if instructional design is a good “fit” as a career. This is less about the skills and more about the desire; it’s about figuring out if you’d be happy working as an instructional designer.

If the learner is at the core of your company's learning goals, it makes total sense to build a training around their learning pathways; from the tools they use, to the design of the training itself. For many, simply reading the word “classroom” might conjure up memories that are best left firmly settled in the cobwebs of history. While there are solid benefits of learning in a classroom setting, the needs of today’s training culture are not conducive to sitting in hard chairs with brain-numbing fluorescent lighting and hours upon hours of slide presentations.

How many times have you focused really hard in an effort to learn something once just to forget it later on? For most of us, it’s a regular occurrence. Over time, memories fade. Good memories, bad memories, important memories…all of them. That doesn’t mean we forget everything entirely – just that the details become fuzzy. Ask anyone at Degreed who’s spent any amount of time with me and they’ll tell you my dislike for the word “implementation” to describe what our team does. The definition of implementation is “ the process of putting a decision or plan into effect; execution,” which doesn’t really represent what we do. Yes, the Client Engagement team does help clients mobilize their learning and skills decisions, but we’re not just gathering requirements, managing projects, and implementing software.

Purchasing a new LMS is a serious undertaking for any organization. There are several steps to be checked, quite a few things to be investigated, numerous stakeholders to be interviewed and not a small amount of negotiation with the vendors. Yet once that long and somewhat tedious process is done and L&D specialists get to see their brand new and shiny LMS in action it is all worthwhile.
