Critical Thinking Case 1: How to Get Managers to Use Critical Thinking

The Challenge: How to teach Managers to use critical thinking to solve a real-life issue such as, how to handle an incompetent employee.

The Fix and Key Insights:

   1. Tell a Story that Captures Their Attention
To capture the learner’s attention from the start, we used a video synopsis of the issue we wanted them to analyze.
   2. Provide tools for analysis
Then we provided learners with tools, such as a FishBone, to allow them to analyze the issue and then post their thoughts so others could see them too.
   3. Encourage Learners to Learn from Each Other<
Allow learners to discuss their analysis and findings with others to encourage a community of learning.  We did this by allowing each learner to post their analysis and provide comments on each others’ work so they can learn from each other.

The Outcome: Managers learned from each other and were better able to work things out with their own incompetent employees by having better critical thinking skills.
