For those of you who have been following this blog, you will recall that last academic year 05/06 I ran a trial with my HND Computer Systems Engineering students where I used the VLE to investigate the delivery of about 20% of the course material based around the Social Constructivist model. The particular framework that I chose for this was the ‘Community of Enquiry’ from Garrison, Anderson and Archer.

I just wanted to relate something that I think shows the power of a Wiki in general and Wikipedia particularly. My son, in 4th grade here in California, was assigned a research report on the California Gold Rush and decided to focus his report on the different routes taken by the 49ers. He used a variety of different resources and particularly used the California Gold Rush Historic Maps from the David Rumsey Map Collection.

Found another interesting blog today - Keith Bryant's blog on e-learning reports all the bits about EDEN that I probably missed. Have a look at it when you get the chance, as it's well worth a read. That's the great thing about the blogosphere - what someone misses, someone else nails down. Keith holds the same opinion as me about Teemu Arina, and makes some interesting points bout what was discussed during the Web 2.0 sessions at the conference.

The post / poll / discussion around having better conferences continues to grow. There are quite a few really good comments and the trackbacks from the post are really quite good. Yesterday I blogged that there was little or no difference between FaceBook and MySpace, principally because I thought there was no difference between the social class profiles of users. Now it seems that there may be a difference between the two social networking services after all. A new report (see BBC News online) reveals that MySpace is fast losing ground to both FaceBook and Bebo , and that in the UK in particular, these two are much more popular.

Management scratching their heads because people aren't taking advantage of the resources that are available. We have all heard the saying, "You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.†We just haven't done a good job of telling the horse that it is hot and drinking now will prevent thirst in the immediate future.

A warm welcome and very best wishes to Gordon Brown, the UK's new Prime Minister. Although this blog is not the right place to express my political opinions, I must confess to having warm feelings for Gordon. He might be a bit dour on the surface, but he's actually got a fair sense of humour, as I experienced when I saw him speak at the Brighton Festival in May of this year.

I've run into the question of how diverse the voices are in the blogosphere before. In Blogs vs Discussion Groups someone said that blogs - "felt so. old white guys club." Janet Clarey's - Women's Voices in the Edublogosphere points out that we have to think about who the women bloggers are - there are some really great women bloggers, but it would seem they are the minority.

Seems our cousins across the other side of the pond are having similar problems to us, at least in their schools. This post from Mike Hasley's Election 2008 blog says it all: Instead of “No Child Left Behind,” our goal should be “Every Child Connected.” The digital divide in our country is worse than it was 10 years ago before our schools were wired.
