First Impressions of TelePresence

Experiencing eLearning

I recently participated in my first TelePresence meeting. If you haven’t seen this technology, imagine videoconferencing, but life-size and set up so it feels more like you’re physically in the same room. In the US, you may have seen Cisco’s commercials with Ellen Page where she visits a classroom that is taking a “field trip&# to China.

Formalizing informal learning?

Clark Quinn

The Entreprise Collaborative has a new question , asking whether we can formalize informal learning. I have to say, I don’t get the question. That is, I understand what they’re asking, and like the response they give, but I really think it’s the wrong question. To me, it’s not about formalizing informal learning so much as explicitly supporting it versus ignoring it.

Writing and the 4C’s of Mobile

Clark Quinn

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m writing a book on mobile learning. My only previous experience was writing Engaging Learning , where the prose practically exploded from my fingers. This time is different. The prose actually does flow quite easily from my fingers, but I find myself restructuring more often than last time. This is a bigger topic, and I keep uncovering new ways to think about mobile and new facets to try to include.

The iPad is here. After all the hype, which it didn’t quite live up to, there was a lot of commentary web-wide on whether it’s suitable for elearning, or a specific type of learning. Here at Upside our camp is divided, there are iPad lovers and there are iPad baiters. The lovers are typically Apple fan-boys who are crazy about anything Apple, so their devotion to any bit of technology that Steve Jobs throws into the market is taken for granted.

How to Create Custom Buttons in Captivate

Integrated Learnings

by Jonathan Shoaf. Consistency is important when delivering eLearning. This is why most eLearning professionals develop a standard look and feel for all their courses. Learners need to be focused on learning the topic, not on finding out how to get to the next page or which button to click next. Buttons are a part of a standard look and feel and they need to be consistent through all of your courses.

Can Brain Science Actually Help Make Your Training & Teaching Stick?

Speaker: Andrew Cohen, Founder & CEO of Brainscape

The instructor’s PPT slides are brilliant. You’ve splurged on the expensive interactive courseware. Student engagement is stellar. So… why are half of your students still forgetting everything they learned in just a matter of weeks? It's likely a matter of cognitive science! With so much material to "teach" these days, we often forget to incorporate key proven principles into our curricula — namely active recall, metacognition, spaced repetition, and interleaving practice.

What Can Health Care Learn From Toyota?

What can we learn from Toyota’s fall from grace? This is the question I ask in a blog posted on February 11 th. In that piece I write about Toyota’s need to learn about the deficiencies in its corporate culture rather than framing their problem as one of defective parts. Other organizations that are trying to adapt “The Toyota Way” to their own operations should look at Toyota’s experience as a wake-up call.
