Google Plus: Initial Impressions

Upside Learning

It’s been quite an interesting week on the Google front, with the launch of one new service after another. The one making the biggest waves (if you pardon the pun) has been Google+ (plus). Having wrangled an invite, I used it for a couple of hours. These are some first impressions. It shouldn’t be surprising that I’m making lots of comparison to Facebook which is the defacto social networking standard right now.

Adobe Captivate 5.5: Quizzes To Write Home About

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by Kevin Siegel You've always been able to create quizzes with Captivate. Of course, over the years the quiz features have gotten better and better. However, if you've spent any time with the quiz feature in Captivate 5, you are probably a bit disappointed with how bad some of the text formatting features are. For instance, when you add a multiple choice question slide, something simple like aligning the text horizontally is a real challenge.

The Death of the Traditional Web: Implications for Self-Directed Learning

Dashe & Thomson

A friend of mine recently sent me a fascinating article titled “ The Shrinking of the Non-Social Web ” which contained some real eye-openers. Essentially the Web is not just evolving gradually as it absorbs the impact of smartphones and social media; it’s changing so radically that it might be better to look at what’s happening as the birth of an entirely new concept of internet interactivity and learning.

Flash to HTML5 – Swiffy From Google

Upside Learning

This has come just in time for mLearning implementers; there is a new tool out in Google Labs called Swiffy that let’s one convert flash animation (swf files) to a device independent HTML5. Simply put, this will allow existing libraries of flash animation content to be ported to devices that run iOS – iPhones, iPads, and iPods. This also helps us poor elearning developers circumvent the continuous war between Adobe and Apple over flash technology, and allow delivery across devices/platforms.

The Course Catalog Is (Should Be) Dead

The Performance Improvement Blog

Recently, I was asked a very thought-provoking question by the director of HRD for a large organization. I was explaining the “5As Framework” to her and she asked, “What are the implications for what we do here?” I immediately launched into my usual speech about getting managers of learners involved in actively supporting the learning process. This led to a discussion of all the excuses she hears from managers to explain their lack of involvement in employee learning.

Learning vs Development

E-Learning Provocateur

Is there a difference between learning and development? I ruminated over this question for a number of years as a Learning & Development professional, but without much progress. I could never draw a clear line between the two, so I considered the “D&# in “L&D&# to be a simple tautology. That was until a colleague of mine recommended I read Making the Case for a Developmental Perspective by Dr Suzanne R Cook-Greuter.

eLearning: Putting it Into Context

The Logical Blog by IconLogic

by AJ George. Another eLearning Devcon has come and gone, and if you missed it you missed a great conference with great speakers.as well as gorgeous weather and scenery in Salt Lake City, Utah. I attended many sessions (from mLearning, to 508 compliance, to HTML5, etc), but it seemed to me that it all came back to one topic, and that was putting learning into context so that learners could understand and easily retrieve the learned knowledge later so that it could be implemented.

Google’s What Do You Love?

Upside Learning

I discovered something interesting when trawling my feeds this morning. Google has sneak launched a new way of search aggregation result, technology blogs are tripping over it. Google calls it ‘ What Do You Love? ’. It’s a strange and quirky way to look at search results. Stranger still there is no mention of this on Google’s blog. I love Lego, so that’s what I typed into the search box.

Instructional Game Considerations

Kapp Notes

Here are some random game development considerations pulled from research: The beneficial effects of games and simulations were most likely to be found when specific content was targeted and objectives precisely defined. Games can provide knowledge increases in learners. Games tend to be more motivating than traditional instructional design. Instructional games should be embedded in instructional programs that include debriefing and feedback so the learners understand what happened in the game a

It made me reflect on an interesting tension that emerged at the conference. The resolution will happen, so it’s a question of when, not if, but it’s still a pain. Community and Collaborative Learning

Dashe & Thomson

I was talking last week with a young woman from Kenya who does accounting for a local financial services company. She started discussing the differences between our culture and the one she came from. In Kenya, she said, everyone is very community-focused; but here, in the United States, we function as completely separate individuals. She described how she and her Kenyan friends get together frequently for an entire day to cook, talk, braid each other’s hair, and learn things from each other.
