Instructional Design: Something Old, Something New

Allison Rossett

A few years ago, Jim Marshall and I surveyed workplace learning professionals about elearning. Although we set out to learn about the contours of the elearning terrain, our project revealed much about instructional design practice today. We pursued this question: when doing elearning, what are you doing? Were learning professionals relying on webinars, on podcasts, on mobile learning?

The key to informal learning is autonomy

Jane Hart

Jay Cross, the author of the 2007 seminal book, Informal Learning, Rediscovering the Natural Pathways that Inspire Innovation and Performance , recently wrote a blog post in which he explained that although there has been a lot of talk about “informal learning” in the last five years, there has been very little action. He writes: “I thought I had made a sound business case for investing more in informal learning, but few organizations changed their ways.

PKM is our part of the social learning contract

Jane Hart

Yesterday, Harold Jarche shared the image on the right, in his post To learn, we must do. For me this is spot on. Whereas most people are concerning themselves with the new social and collaboration technologies, or how to get people to collaborate, for me the key to successful social learning is how the individual engages in his/her networks and contributes what s/he has learned or is learning along the way.

Kapp’s Gamification for Learning and Instruction

Clark Quinn

Karl Kapp’s written another book, this time on gamification , and I certainly liked his previous book with Tony O’Driscoll on Virtual Worlds. This one’s got some great stuff in it too, and some other ideas that raise some hackles. Let me get one of the quibbles out of the way at the start: I hate the title “The Gamification of Learning and Instruction” (to the point I previously wrote a post arguing instead for ‘ engagification ‘).

Email and the Ladder of Inference

The Performance Improvement Blog

Email, as well as text messages, Tweets, and Facebook comments, are often misinterpreted. The words might be clear but the tone of the message is not understood. In fact, tone cannot be accurately communicated in these media. The brevity of the sender’s message and limited attention on the part of the receiver result in a kind of communication that is ripe for misconstrued emotion and intensity.

Mobile Work

Style-ish

Clark Quinn

I’m a real fan of styles, ala Microsoft Word. If you don’t get this concept, I wish you would. Let me explain. The concept is fairly simple. Instead of hand-formatting a document by manually adding in bold, font sizes, italics, indents, extra paragraph returns, you define a paragraph as a ‘style’ That is, you say this paragraph is a heading 1, that paragraph is normal or body text, this other one is a figure, etc.

The intention originally was to visit classes and just see what was happening, but then you are likely to miss out on good practice elsewhere, and so in practice I settled on a combination of observation visits and short interviews.
