I was recently asked me about my recommendations for conducting effective online conferences (virtual conference). We’ve used Elluminate as our webinar system. I didn’t quite get the full effect due to our setup (more on that later), but I can see how this would actually give you a sense of “being there.&# We decided to mute, similar to what we would do with a big group in a web conferencing tool like WebEx or Elluminate. But I think it was the wrong choice.

I believe that for any effective learning event (events come together to form a continuous learning experience) a structure of before/during/after applies. For example during university my most effective classes were the ones that we prepared for ahead of time by reading the materials and then came to class ready to discuss.
