NOT Learning Engineering

Clark Quinn

I recently wrote about two different interpretations of the term ‘learning engineering’ So when I saw another article on the topic, I was keen to read it. Except, after reading it, I thought what it was talking about was not learning engineering, or, at least, not all of it. I think this article goes wrong right from the title: Learning Engineering Is Learning About Learning. But is that what learning engineering is?

Content engineering

Clark Quinn

We’ve heard about learning engineering and while the focus is on experience design, the pragmatics include designing content to create the context, resources, and motivation for the activity. This is content engineering , and it’s a direction we need to go. This isn’t effective content governance, and content should have regular cycles of review and expiry dates.

Learning Engineering

Clark Quinn

And one thing that struck me was folks talking about learning engineering. If we take the analogy from regular science and engineering, we are talking about taking the research from the learning sciences, and applying it to the design of solutions. The focus of the engineering, however, is different. Is learning engineering an alternative to instructional design? Last week I had the opportunity to attend the inaugural meeting of the Global Learning Council.

Socio-cultural engineering?

Clark Quinn

Ok, social engineering and cultural engineering have bad connotations in a number of ways. Yet, if I can talk about learning engineering, the desirable properties of cultures for learning, and moves in that direction, aren’t we really talking about socio-cultural engineering? So, if we’re choosing cultural values, and working towards them, both in ways that reflect what science tells us about doing our best, aren’t we really doing such engineering?

Organizational Learning Engineering

Systemic ways to get the combined benefits of more effective output and more engaged people. I’ve argued in the past that we should treat learning design seriously, with the depth of rocket science applied as a learning engineering. Organizational learning processes – across L&D, Executive Development, Leadership Development, and more of the roles in HR and talent management – are largely still rooted in both industrial era models and myths.
