Music, learning and pedagogy

Teachers who work with their students tend to be more effective than those who stand apart. The same applies in teaching - too much information or content all at once can overwhelm and disorientate students. How to Create Effective Test Questions

Since online learning often separates teachers from learners across time and distance, we rely on evaluations – in the form of tests, quizzes and assessments – to judge each student’s successful comprehension of the content (and to judge how well the course designers presented their information). If every student answers a question correctly, does that mean your question is too easy, or is it a perfect example of an effective test question?

How to Measure Online Course Effectiveness

Instructional designers aim to provide the necessary content to accomplish these goals, but sometimes the delivery of a course or training isn’t very effective. Luckily, there’s a proven process that helps you measure the effectiveness of your courses and start to fix any problems in their delivery. This level seeks to evaluate whether your learners acquired the information, skills, and knowledge they were expecting to obtain.

How to Make Sure Your Course Meets Its Learning Objectives

To be effectively measured, these objectives must be framed in terms of the ABCD guidelines proposed by educational psychologist and theorist Robert Mager to include: A = Audience. Be very careful not to confuse Training Objectives (which may be much broader in scope, like “obtaining a driver’s license”) with individual Learning Objectives for that course (like “understanding the rules of safe vehicle operation”).

The Secret to Beating the Forgetting Curve

If your goal is to retain that knowledge and apply it when new situations require it, studies have shown that your best bet is to learn in smaller doses, and repeat key information over time. As Ebbinghaus and his students found, no matter how interested they are in a subject, people tend to forget new information if it isn’t periodically reinforced. This is more effective than cramming the entire arc of a lesson into one nonstop session.

Tips for Adapting an In-Person Course to an Online Course

Effectively transferring your in-person courses to an online format requires a deliberate strategy, planning, and execution. First, you need to know what information and media you already have available for the course, and what you’ll need to create anew. If you rearrange the order of the information in your ILT courses to suit an asynchronous online audience, you may also need to reorganize your preexisting tests and quizzes.

Notwithstanding the student attention issues, I explained that video can be at its most effective when it is used in short bursts as a stimulus to enrich and extend learning, to promote discussion, encourage collaboration and to challenge students' thinking - but definitely not as a replacement for the teacher. The AfL truth about assessment

This is assessment for learning (AfL) rather than assessment of learning, and it''s critical for good pedagogy. I think we all agreed that in this information rich society, knowledge is changing, and that in some cases ''knowing'' itself is taking on new meaning. Shouldn''t curricula and assessment (especially the high stakes kind) now focus more on the kinds of knowledge and cognitive skills students need to survive and thrive in an information rich world?
