Taking Stock and Making Choices: Working from home and other such stuff

ID Reflections

Mostly, business as usual at work and crisis situations at home took my time and attention. Because I love what I do (and I am hugely fortunate in that sense), it’s very easy to let my work consume me and my time. Much has been written about priorities and work life balance — especially for women. To strike a work-life balance, work from home as much as possible (most of the time). This taught me a few things about work, technology and myself.

Information Skills Needed

bozarthzone

I've been doing a good deal of research/work lately with knowledge management. One of my concerns is that the focus so often seems to be only on output: where can we store knowledge? Here is a piece out of Millikin University on the information skills needed by those entering knowledge work roles. For each information skill, there is a discussion of its significance, the logical skills required for its effective use, and its technological components

But there was another significant trend in the answers… Learning and Work Converge In a world where Knowledge Work and Learning is Inseparable , finding ways to support and improve work is the same as finding ways to support and improve learning. Jay Cross in Ten Years After puts it: In a knowledge society, learning is the work. Who in an organization is responsible for supporting and improving work? Isn't that the definition of management.

Tool Set 2009

I thought I'd kick off this year by posting a series of posts on topics related to tools and methods for work and learning. Setting up a SharePoint for a community or work team is very different from teaching them about Personal Learning. In fact, the lack of attention to this topic was the reason I founded Work Literacy in June of 2008. Tools to Make Reading & Research More Effective.

Effectiveness – Jay Cross. Until the shift from industrial to network dominance, corporations could compensate for crummy learning by hiring experienced people and managing ingenious command-and-control structures. In a networked corporation, there is scant difference between knowledge work and learning. Business success depends on them working together rather than as individuals. They work and learn in what I call a “learnscape.”.

I also had a chat a few days ago with a Wall Street Journal reporter who is researching an article on knowledge worker productivity. I said yes, and mouthed the old Peter Drucker chestnut that "making knowledge work productive is the greatest economic challenge of this century." Not Your Father’s ROI

Jay Cross

We are witnessing the death throes of management models that have outlived their usefulness. At the same time, we are shifting into an era in which knowledge work and learning occur where re-engineered business processes collide with a participative and interactive ecology of information flows. The working definition of ROII is the observable development of capacity and capability to create economic values out of intangibles. You Must Manage What You Can’t Measure.

Working Smarter eFieldbook $12

Jay Cross

Working smarter is the key to sustainability and continuous improvement. Knowledge work and learning to work smarter are becoming indistinguishable. The accelerating rate of change in business forces everyone in every organization to make a choice: learn while you work or become obsolete. The infrastructure for working smarter is called a workscape. It’s not a separate function so much as another way of looking at how we organize work.
