Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) do exactly what they say on the can - they are personal to each individual, created by them, owned by them, used by them within their lifelong learning. Originally a counterpoint to the institutional Managed Learning Environment (iMLE or 'VLE'), PLEs are becoming a much talked about concept, and were the prime focus of the recently held PLE Conference in Cornella, Barcelona.

Learning should always come before technology. Ideas range from games based learning , to the use of social media and networking, to simpler approaches such as the use of digital cameras in art or data logging in science. In mathematics, I have seen interactive whiteboards used very effectively to teach number bonds and floor robots can be used successfully to teach geometry and algorithms. Sometimes, the technology does get in the way of learning and teaching.

Interactions can be managed around a specific hashtag related to the course, or can be private between the tutor and students using the Direct Message (DM) option. I have managed many meaningful conversations with students about their work through this method, both during lessons and also post-lecture, but it''s clearly not for everyone. I have used these to great effect with smaller groups to enable them to document and share their progress during project work.
