Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion

Tony Karrer

I've run across a few different posts talking about Personal Work and Learning Environments which I have tentatively started to call PWLE - pronounced p-whale. The reason why I think it's worth us talking about tools and maps and basically what is your PWLE (p-whale) is that it's helpful for us to figure out how to support our own personal work and learning.

Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - eLearning Technology. I believe there's quite a bit of commonality among the kinds of tasks we deal with (at an abstract level) and we need to help each other figure out how we can effectively and efficiently work through these tasks as individuals, as work teams, as part of a larger ecosystem. Tools to Make Reading & Research More Effective. This sounds a lot like a personal learning environment, personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal work and learning environment (PWLE) and PIM. The same tool and method can be highly effective for one person and not effective for others. For example, Personal Learning , PLE , PWLE , PKM are all pretty closely related.

When I look at this from more the PWLE ( Personal WORK and learning environment ) perspective, I find that there are similar functions, but possibly a different mind set. And certainly the effect of the network of PLEs is similar to the search for individuals that I describe. There's a fantastic post by Stephen Downes - New Technology Supporting Informal Learning.

Each of these allowed me to fast forward my learning and share knowledge effectively. I realized that a lot of the networking that I had done in person in the past could move online and actually be a much more effective use of time. So, why not look to make this more explicit and effective? It’s very powerful stuff and an important extension to my PWLE.

In a discussion with a LinkedIn connection, the topic of a quicker way to complete an effective performance analysis came up. Everybody knows about network effects: the value of a network increases exponentially with the addition of each new node.
