Second Life Happenings: CEO Steps Down (again)

Kapp Notes

Here is what he wrote on the Second Life blog. I don’t think the timing on this is too good from a corporate perspective as articles such as Academics Discuss Mass Migration From Second Life are starting appear due to the elimination of the educational discount once provided to academic and non-profit institutions using Second Life. So, it doesn’t look real good for the future of Second Life.

Questions about Second Life

Kapp Notes

Recently, I received a some really good questions related specifically to Second Life but primarily are about virtual worlds and the use of these worlds for education. I'll answer the questions here since I think they reflect concerns that many educators have related to the social networks and Second Life. 1) Kids use these “places” like Second Life, Facebook, etc. One school doing a lot of "actual work" in the area of Second Life is Ohio State.

Think Virtual Worlds: Not Second Life

Kapp Notes

Here is this Month's ASTD Big Question: Second Life Training? More specifically: In what situations, do you believe it makes sense to develop a learning experience that will be delivered within Second Life? If you were to develop a training island in Second Life, what kind of environment and artifacts would you consider essential for teaching? But first I want to say that we need to get away from thinking the only 3D learning envrionemnt is Second Life.

Second Life as a Learning Tool

Tony Karrer

Found via Corporate eLearning Strategies and Development A great introduction to using Second Life as a teaching / learning tool. I've said for a while that Second Life offers something interesting in terms of providing a natural "setting" for online sessions, presentations, etc. The hurdles for Second Life are still a little too high for them to become truly mainstream, but would be great for a controlled audience.

The second course used the game Second Life to teach the fundamentals of video-game design and criticism.

More Advantages of 3D Learning Worlds

Kapp Notes

The second advantage of learning in 3D, and an almost opposite benefit, is 3D virtual worlds allow learners to be immersed in a learning environment as close to the actual performance environment as the learner can get without actually being there. When this happens, it allows the learner to more effectively encode the learning for future recall and provides the cues needed to apply the experience from the 3D world to actual on-the-job performance.

Teaching Higher Order Skills in a Virtual World

Kapp Notes

Running a business in something like Second Life is inexpensive and better way to teach business concepts than having students run an actual business in Real Life with big bucks. Last night I attended my first meeting in Second Life. We heard examples of mock courts, English as a Second Language (ESL) and the creation of ancient cities as well as role-plays. The meeting was, at times, chaotic with many people chatting and, I noticed, Second Life doesn't really have any classroom management features, it is hard to tell who raised their hand first and a little difficult to avoid one person talking over another.

The E-Learning Curve

Yeats' 1920 poem "The Second Coming" has an fascinating couplet: Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world and the first phrase in particular has always resonated with me - and not just with me: "Things fall apart" has appeared in creative works as diverse as Chinua Achebe's eponymous 1958 novel through to an episode of Ugly Betty.
