Rapid Authoring – Freeform Vs Template Based

Upside Learning

While working on rapid authored courses (courses authored using rapid authoring tools), I often encounter the decision point of whether to use freeform rapid authoring tools or the traditional template-based tools. To focus more on rapidly authored eLearning content, I am excluding the screen recording tools which are mainly used for software simulation type of courses. First, let’s look at template-based tools. These are typically WYSIWYG kind of tools.

eLearning Guild Authoring & Development Tools Research Report (2008)

Learning Visions

After my session at ISPI earlier this week, someone commented that what would have really been useful is a list of the top 10 authoring tools in the market. During my presentation, I flashed up on the screen a list of the 122+ tools listed in the Brandon Hall database. And of course, the tool needs to fit the purpose, so one tool won’t fit all. I did dig up the eLearning Guild Authoring Tools Research Report (January 2008).

Design, ID, a tool, ? Which, if it’s done well, includes several different tools, lots of ID, a whiff of interface design, some experience prototyping different types of interactions (sync, games, etc), and one major project with project planning, prototyping, testing, and production. I don’t really care how you prototype: it can be PPT, raw html, whatever. For production, there are lots of tools out there.
