When I first got into designing and developing eLearning, it was around 2004, and the first authoring tool I used was Adobe Captivate 2.0. This authoring tool was Toolbook, and I believe it was version 9. I’ve not actively used Toolbook in many years. Most of what I learned about Toolbook has faded from memory.

ToolBook authoring tool - this is the DHTML authoring tool used at my company, but prior to this I used TrainerSoft (now Outstart Trainer), which is my preference. It is a glimpse not just into their development tool preferences, but it also provides some reflection into the approaches they take in creating courses.

I was able to create some really great eLearning with Windows but it was NOT fun. We could learn Hypercard or we could learn Toolbook. I had chosen the corporate track so I selected Toolbook. But luckily the other student that knew toolbook knew it REALLY well and I learned a lot. It was an eMac. Again, a huge let down.

Over the years, I have used ToolBook, Trainersoft, and even Dreamweaver with Coursebuilder. Back when I first started developing e-learning courses, I used Macromedia's Authorware. For more interactive elements, I used Flash and imported the SWFs into Authorware.

The world of authoring tools started at the advanced level, Authorware, Toolbook and to an extent DazzlerMax. Lectora Online . Storyline 360 is not a 100% cloud based authoring tool, just fyi.
