This type of environment could be a distraction to educational pursuits. I would choose something like Elluminate Live for my synchronous activities. Elluminate's learning curve is a much more gentle slope. For now, I view it as 100% experimental - it is simply an intriguing social simulation environment. Two more years?

Taking part of a teaching session in a Multiuser Virtual Environment (MUVE) is more than simply using a tool or achieving a task, it feels like an event, a particular moment in time when you have the chance to interact with others at a level of intensity which is rarely felt in other online spaces. Firewalls and restrictive corporate environments caused us considerable grief: Yahoo Groups were restricted in some corporate environments, Elluminate did not work through several firewalls, we had to switch to WebEx and that really goofed up the start of the course; Yahoo Toolbar (for MyWeb ) couldn't be installed on locked desktops.

So, both the webinar tool (Elluminate, WebEx, Adobe Connect, etc.) environment to give more presence to meetings. The last few online webinars I've attended there's been an interesting issue. Many of the participants are Twitter users who are becoming used to chatting via twitter. Pretty much they are all looking alike.
