When I liveblogged the TCC 2008 conference , I always had the Elluminate presentation up on my primary screen (my desktop computer) and my blog on my laptop. I didn’t use a mic for anything other than our team’s presentation, and it’s easier to listen with speakers for hours a day than a headset.

You present your ideas, including slides and audio connection, live to a massive group of participants that span the globe, and then you discuss those ideas for a while.

Today was a technological success, where we linked 5 people together using Elluminate and managed a slightly flakey audio system in a very large and echoey hotel ballroom in Kuala Lumpur. When I give a presentation live and face to face, it is qualitatively different for me and my audience to a presentation I give through Elluminate or Adobe Connect. Are we better at presenting our ideas in pictures or as a podcast? This assumes that we communicate differently depending on the tool we use.

The formula appears to be pretty consistent: Purchase some licenses for one of the more popular rapid authoring tools, typically Articulate / Adobe Presenter (for PowerPoint-based content) or Adobe Captivate (where there's more of an IT training bias). Many of my colleagues are doing the same.

No access to Elluminate. Chat messaging on Elluminate was working OK, but not the best medium for presenting a live talk. I lost Elluminate completely (again). I came in two hours early, tested out the system. The institutional network locked me out. Proxy error or firewall problem. They couldn't resolve it. Grand Opera?

The quality is simply nowhere near as good as a direct download of the slides at a high resolution.

Yesterday I gave a presentation to a couple of dozen people using Adobe Connect Pro. Most presenters I’ve watched never go beyond the default settings. I’ve found it easier to present things in Skype. I couldn’t see them. I might as well have been blindfolded. I’m more into conversations.
