SL is very heavy on the ‘social scene.’ It appears that a great many people in SL are here to meet other people with intentions or striking up more than just a casual friendship. I would choose something like Elluminate Live for my synchronous activities. Elluminate's learning curve is a much more gentle slope. Not to mention the fact that the potentially distracting 'social scene' is avoided.)

I'm actively engaged in all kinds of sites that can be roughly described as social networking. Add it to your Elluminate and WebEx profiles. Through this, and because of my My LinkedIn Open Connection Approach where I basically treat LinkedIn like a really big business mixer, I have lots of opportunity to "meet" new people online. My guess is that about 25% of the people I run into do not have a profile photo.

So, both the webinar tool (Elluminate, WebEx, Adobe Connect, etc.) I recently complained that even after all these years, tools like Elluminate and WebEx still didn't provide the ability to have people put their pictures and other information on their profiles so you could find out more about the users. The last few online webinars I've attended there's been an interesting issue. Many of the participants are Twitter users who are becoming used to chatting via twitter.

No access to Elluminate. Chat messaging on Elluminate was working OK, but not the best medium for presenting a live talk. I lost Elluminate completely (again). To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

It makes it very simple to distribute your content to lots of social media and draw people from various audiences into one place to have conversation. I have used www.dimdim.com before and Elluminate (but this is not open source.) Elluminate is a really nice tool but not open source.

If you use any online social network tool, the single most important first impression you make is with the 3600 to 5000 pixels you get for your tiny picture. I received a response that I didn't expect on my post Profile Photo. In that post, I suggested that you should always add a profile photo: Don't join that new Ning group without attaching your photo.
