Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Emerging Technologies in e-Learning

Learning Visions

Thursday, June 28, 2007 Emerging Technologies in e-Learning I sat in on a lunchtime WebEx presentation with Gary Woodill -- Director, Research and Analysis, Brandon Hall Research. The topic: Emerging Technologies in e-Learning. Emerging" = kinds of e-learning that are just starting to show up -- in labs, new company offerings. Gary has worked on three "Emerging e-Learning" reports Emerging E-Learning Technologies: Have looked at 52 emerging technologies.

Learning with 'e's: You've been framed

Perhaps this is one reason why his work was suppressed for so long and only began to emerge as a major theory of learning long after his premature demise. Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development theory has long been revered by the education community as a model for describing what happens when we learn in social contexts.

The ongoing work of learning standards

And then the IMS (an initiative of Educause before being spun out as an independent effort) started creating standards, as did the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers), the major body in the US responsible for computing standards. A concern with what people do , not just what they learn, was also emerging. In addition, IMS has released a specification for activity very much like xAPI, called Caliper.

3 Revolutionary Developments Transforming the Pharmaceutical Landscape

According to a report released by IMS Health, by 2017, the US is likely to capture the highest share (31%) of the global market for medicines, which will reach between $1.135 trillion and $1.235 trillion. Cammy Beans Learning Visions: The Value of Instructional Designers

Learning Visions

Reuben on the downside of rapid e-Learning tools: The emergence of "easy-to-use" authoring tools, however, has tempted us to believe that the instructional designer can do it all! But Im not sure I can get people to hold their answers back. Sorry Tony, but Im going to jump into the conversation now. Dont worry though; Im sure Ill still have more to say if you do this for the Big Question for February. Im on a smaller team though, so we are basically the "one-stop shop."

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Getting Pysched for FaceBook

Learning Visions

Monday, June 25, 2007 Getting Pysched for FaceBook Im definitely feeling out-of-my element in this whole FaceBook thing. Im trying to get into it and discover its potential professional uses. Im just scratching the surface, I suppose. Im feeling lonely and really nerdy. Id like to push this somehow, but Im not sure. Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Using FaceBook

Learning Visions

Tuesday, June 19, 2007 Using FaceBook Im trying to expand my horizons a bit these days and have been taking a closer look at a whole bunch of tools out there, including SecondLife and FaceBook. So Ive got this client Im working with to help define an e-Learning strategy , and Im thinking about what role FaceBook should/could play in their plan. Im interested in how we could leverage that existing community for better communication, learning opportunities, networking, etc.

Digital Efficiency & Your Workforce

The word “digital” has been thrown around as the emerging core of how businesses will operate in the future. Communication through an understanding of email, SMS, social media, IM and voicemail. New skills to augment current competencies, such as creativity and critical thinking, will be required to be a valuable, contributing member of this emerging workforce. But what does it mean? The word itself simply means information is recorded as a series of binary digits.

It’s Time To Focus On Remote Workforce Management

This is especially true considering body language cues (and sometimes even tone) are missed out; during phone calls, texts, IMs, and emails; which make for 93% of personal communication effectiveness (as seen in the pie chart below on elements of personal communication).

What Your Onboarding Kit Should Include (And Why You Should Offer One)

Emergency contacts. So, make sure to include this information in your onboarding kit for new employees: A directory of employee profiles including names, contact details, and usernames on company messaging applications like Slack or IM. It’s Day 1 at your new job. As you walk through the sliding door and towards the front desk to let them know you’ve arrived, you can’t keep the smile off your face. This is exactly the career opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

The Ecosystem of Learning Technologies: 8 Points For Immersive Training

Working patterns: New working practices are developing due to the emergence of new tools. Here are some examples of merging technology boundaries: · Secret spaces (SMS, IM). The abundant use of technology in all contexts of life, work, education, entertainment or any other you can imagine and we haven’t, has led to the development of an vast ecosystem of tech.

My solution to resolving this could be to do something like declaring " bookmark bankruptcy " but I dont feel like doing that; instead, Im going to hold a blog-a-thon. I do much better when Im under public pressure so Im putting myself under the gun to produce between 5 and 10 blog posts a day for the next 30 days. e-Clippings (Learning As Art) Home Archives Subscribe About My Social Networks « Happy Birthday U.S.!

The Learning Polemic [Guest Post]

Corporate eLearning Strategies and Development

We're seeing a polemic emerge pitting proprietary systems and exclusive content against open systems and open content. The IMS Global Consortium is defining the next generation of standards that make this market transformation possible. The emerging model will have open content, open ePortfolio, and open tools. IMS has released an update to Learning Tools Interoperability that allows learning designers to connect to remote services, authenticate the user, and return a result.

Standards and success

Clark Quinn

While IMS & IEEE held meetings to get learning content standards nailed down, ADL just put their foot down with SCORM (and US Defense is a big foot), and it pretty much got everyone’s attention. Eventually, one format will emerge, but it may take committees, or it may be that someone like Linden Labs will own the space sufficiently that everyone will lock into a format they provide. Apparently, Google has recently opined that the future of mobile is web standards.

So someone tell me if Im wrong but here is how I am seeing this.the way IT departments are currently incentivized - their ideal situation would be zero users and no connection to the Internet. Im not casting stones here, in fact in a way Im apologizing to all the IT departments for whom Ive caused trouble by demanding applications and access that did nothing to honor the way the were rated on the job performance - essentially I just kept asking them to do me favors.

9 Top eLearning Trends of 2017 from 49 Experts

Those future trends include Spontaneous Learning Systems (SLS), Intelligent Mentoring Systems (IMS), and highly personalized learning services. With all the new and cool tools out there, I see an emerging and welcome trend in moving away from a one-size-fits-all approach to elearning. Historically, eLearning is behind the time for tech adoption – a late adopter of flash, slow to accept HTLM5, and responsive design has only emerged for Captivate and Articulate in the past few years.

Cammy Beans Learning Visions: Metaphors of Instructional Design

Learning Visions

Now Im not saying that SMEs are rats, or instructional designers are rats. Im thinking of Chestertons remark that theres a big difference between a man who wants to read a book and a man who wants a book to read. Im not condemning these things, but I think that decision-makers in particular follow those tendencies and expect/seek/demand a class/course model. Both the latter require thought about wholl do what and why, and the what and why may only emerge on the job.
