A few years ago, Jim Marshall and I surveyed workplace learning professionals about elearning. Although we set out to learn about the contours of the elearning terrain, our project revealed much about instructional design practice today. Were learning professionals relying on webinars, on podcasts, on mobile learning? Tutorials, scenario-based learning, practice and feedback, and problem-solving strategies were identified as typical. Many call it informal.

It takes a while for the important lessons to emerge. The new face of learning was made of our faces. I was delighted to find my Belgian friend Inge de Waart at the Mobile Learning Camp. Wednesday ended with a wonderful dinner for those of us who’ve recorded podcasts for Xyleme. They’re into talent management, social learning, or anything besides what they really do. Learning is becoming DIY (do-it-yourself) by the moment.
