A Way With The Fairies

The makers of masterpieces such as Toy Story and The Lion King evidently couldn’t engineer a dinky little augmented reality app that would work on my device of choice – or even on my device of second choice. I discovered the Aurasma app a while ago, and I’ve been toying around with it to get a sense of how it works. One of the greatest hoaxes to be perpetrated last century was that of the Cottingley Fairies.

Learning Creativity and About Creativity From Lego

Upside Learning

I studied engineering and found that it enabled a framework of thought that allowed me to be creative within its constraints. Systematic creativity is encouraged and enabled in many disciplines such as the arts, science, design and of course, engineering. This offering a system of interaction and creation (leading to an environment of play) rather than a toy is great for play and learning.

This Week on #TalkTech: MakerSwarm, Interactive Video, and Data Hoarders

Bottom-Line Performance

MakerSwarm makes “hacking” devices so easy a 10-year could do it—and that’s how we inspire the next generation of engineers. Could MakerSwarm inspire and empower a whole new generation of engineers? The idea is simple: We’re surrounded by electronics with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and computer chips inside them: gadgets like smartphones, e-readers, TVs, toys, appliances, and more. #TalkTech is the “flipped” approach to Twitter chats.

How much is an authoring tool worth?

Clive on Learning

If you're a serious graphic designer, you'll pay $3K for Creative Suite; and audio and video engineers pay similar prices for their software. If, on the other hand, you are talking about toys as opposed to tools of the trade - and I like toys as much as the next person - then $99 seems about right. When I buy a toy I have modest expectations about utility and don't expect any support. In fact many toys never get used. The recent release by Trivantis of Snap!

We are committed to boot-strapping the organization so we aren’t seeking any venture funds, we really are looking for other, more organic, methods of growing and expanding so we can stay focused on our core mission of making learning of science and engineering fun and engaging and helping. What a crazy ride the last few weeks have been. As you may know, I have co-founded a company called 2K Learning and we decided to try Kickstarter to fund part of our company’s birth.

What better time for new toys if not Christmas! Especially with branches and tests we have reworked substantially their underlying engines. We are using the power of the Xapian search engine, along with Open Office’s excellent conversion scripts, to provide for a seamless yet powerful integration with efront’s own search engine. Today we would like to announce a new version of eFront.

Why all the hype surrounding augmented learning?

Did you ever break a toy when you were little because you were curious about what's inside it? I did — more than once — and I was thrilled every time I learned about the inside of the toy. So I've always wondered whether it could be possible to satisfy my curiosity AND keep the toy intact. Or what about seeing all parts of a car engine in action, or determining what's wrong with a car by simply looking under the hood?

Before joining Degreed, Kristy co-founded an EdTech startup, created a learning computation toy that taught teachers and students through block-based coding and text-based scripting, and built out a curriculum that’s still used around the globe. Degreed has a pretty basic philosophy: the people behind our company are the real secret sauce.

Designing E-learning and M-learning for PC and Tablets

SweetRush

As we all know, tablets are not just toys for kids, though they do offer a host of game-based learning apps for the young ones. Existing tools and engineering frameworks can limit having to re-create the wheel, passing cost-savings on to you, and reducing development timelines. At a party recently, I noticed that the kids were missing. My mom instincts kicked in, and, slightly concerned, I asked one of the fathers where his son was. His answer only required one word: “iPad.”

Where Does Innovation Spring From?

CLO Magazine

The Slinky has been a favorite toy for decades, but its discovery had nothing to do with fun or play. In 1943, naval engineer Richard James was trying to design stabilizing springs that would keep sensitive instruments steady on battleships. One day, James dropped a helical spring he was working on and, as it slinked and clinked across the floor, he got the idea to turn it into a toy.
