Emergent Knowledge Management

Tony Karrer

There's been a long running discussion around what Knowledge Management is going to look like going forward and whether big systems that manage knowledge are going to be there. As I read through these, I began to wonder what happened to the idea that KM was going to move along the lines of what Andrew McAfee talks about around Enterprise 2.0. There would be tools like social networks that would allow us to find people inside and outside the enterprise.

Jane Hart

A few days ago my Internet Time Alliance colleague, Harold Jarche, shared this article, written by Deb Lavoy, with me: Social Business Doesn’t Mean What You Think It Does, Neither Does Enterprise 2.0. In other words those who think “social learning&# is just about a new training trend, or about adding social media into the &# blend&# , or that it is about acquiring the latest Social Learning Management System are missing the big picture.

But there was another significant trend in the answers… Learning and Work Converge In a world where Knowledge Work and Learning is Inseparable , finding ways to support and improve work is the same as finding ways to support and improve learning. Jay Cross in Ten Years After puts it: In a knowledge society, learning is the work. Isn't that the definition of management. The main objective of the new training department is to enable knowledge to flow in the organization.

Where Will the Change Come From?

Tony Karrer

At a Web 2.0 event that I moderated, one of the speakers was Matt Glotzbach, Head of Products at Google Enterprise. Thus, much of the focus of Google Enterprise was to see what works in the consumer space and help bring it to the enterprise. What's likely to happen here is that all sorts of innovation in learning, knowledge management, etc. is going to occur in the consumer, prosumer and in uncontrolled pockets in the enterprise.
