Ridiculous research findings on informal learning

companies spent money on informal learning tools or services last year. Most informal learning takes place despite training departments, not because of them. Informal learning is mushrooming as organizations implement social software. It’s hard to imagine informal learning not going along for the ride when a company embraces Jive or Chatter or Yammer or Socialcast or similar networking environments.

Yesterday on video I heard myself stumbling to describe the April 21 session of Corporate Learning Trends & Innovation. I said our theme is improving performance with “natural/informal/web 2.0/connected/social learning. This new learning is strategy, not support. The focus is shifting from the workshop to the workplace, from courses to conversations, from classrooms to learning environments, and from events to on-going processes.

Corporate eLearning Strategies and Development

Read his complete post at the Informal Learning Blog. I don’t find much value in arguing classroom versus network-based learning or formal versus informal because it’s always a case of a little of this and a little of that. So, shouldn't teaching actually be part of any learning program?
