This, of course, is desired in all types of team work, like it is in sports.

Im not sure if the SME was reading a script, reading the notes, or just speaking from the heart. This so rarely happens in the real world -- Evaluation?! We used a real gunnery instructor to narrate all of the exercises, presentation sequences, and activities. Heres what I recall: They created a set of powerpoint slides.

One idea to push the envelope further on this type of assignment is to conduct the entire exercise out in the open in a discussion forum. One other important aspects of group work at a distance is that a component of the final grade MUST include peer evaluation. You of course will grade the quality of their feedback.
