Forums vs. Social Networks?

So, I'm trying to figure out what's going to be the right software / service to adopt, but I'm also trying to think about the differences in: Forum / Threaded Discussion / Group Examples are Google Groups and Yahoo Groups. Social Network Examples are Ning and KickApps. Typically they center around threaded discussions.

Existing Adoption At the very start I asked the audience for examples of where they were currently using these tools as part of learning solutions. No anonymous editing Does anyone have good examples of CYA language you can put on a Wiki? I've not really seen good examples of business cases (future ROI) for using these tools.
