PLE - PWLE Discussion Contiunes - Corporate vs Personal and IP Rights

Tony Karrer

This continues the discussion being had around PLE/PWLEs - see More Discussion on Personal Work Learning Environments for a bit of recap. Tom Haskins has a series of interesting posts - on the topic: Enterprises that love PLE's Traits for creating PLE's at work The P in PLE First, I have to jump on the comments in these posts by Stephen Downes and Michelle Martin. A PLE that is 'inside the enterprise' is a contradiction in terms.

Tool Set 2009

I'm hoping to address questions such as: How do you create a personal tool set or Personal Learning Environment (PLE) for yourself? This sounds a lot like a personal learning environment, personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal work and learning environment (PWLE) and PIM. For example, Personal Learning , PLE , PWLE , PKM are all pretty closely related. But when I go to PLE and then look at the related Tools, I'm not seeing clear winners.

Using SharePoint before, during and after courses This typically takes the form of sharing best practices, code examples, templates, links; posting announcements; having discussions; showing calendar items; supporting student profiles; supporting student project work; sharing notes, documents; providing course content. Examples , most all of these could have been supported through SharePoint.

Stephen Downes commented on my recent post - Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and said - I am opposed to the trend coming from the corporate learning side of the house to treat PLEs as work tools. It was interesting to read this because when I was writing about a PLE really also supporting my work - I didn't think of it in the context of ownership of the work product. Stephen's very much correct about a PLE being for the person.
