PLE - PWLE Discussion Contiunes - Corporate vs Personal and IP Rights

Tony Karrer

The enterprise provides tools to employees that they can use as part of the PWLE. I could understand an argument that it would be preferable for individuals to be able to use the same tools outside the corporation for personal interests - but I don't see his argument that it is no longer a PLE or PWLE. I would have trouble separating a PWLE from the rest of my life, let alone the rest of my learning. Thus, there's no separation between a PLE and a PWLE.

Using SharePoint

Tony Karrer

In my post SharePoint Examples there are some great examples in the comments. Using SharePoint before, during and after courses This typically takes the form of sharing best practices, code examples, templates, links; posting announcements; having discussions; showing calendar items; supporting student profiles; supporting student project work; sharing notes, documents; providing course content. Examples , most all of these could have been supported through SharePoint.

Emergent Knowledge Management

For example, see Bill Ives' recent post , and Paula Thorton. This vision aligns well with what I see happening in eLearning - Direction of eLearning - Emergence or Big System Tacit workers will use their PWLE to work and learn and it will be up to us to figure out how to aggregate and provide structure to leverage this information into valuable content for others in the organization.

This sounds a lot like a personal learning environment, personal knowledge management (PKM) and personal work and learning environment (PWLE) and PIM. For example, Personal Learning , PLE , PWLE , PKM are all pretty closely related. For example, I doubt we are using an authoring tool for personal learning. Getting Things Done is the classic example of this.

Blogging Inside or Outside the Corporate Firewall

Stephen Downes commented on my recent post - Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and said - I am opposed to the trend coming from the corporate learning side of the house to treat PLEs as work tools. I don't personally think this is the right direction for individuals and in my recent presentations on eLearning 2.0 , I suggested in my examples for what this looks like in a corporate environment that people use a tool like Blogger.

Rather, students were told that their role was to select and sample course content, pursuing areas of interest, reading related material from both within and outside the course, and then to contribute their unique perspective based on this reading. When I look at this from more the PWLE ( Personal WORK and learning environment ) perspective, I find that there are similar functions, but possibly a different mind set.

eLearning Topics

For example, we see terms now at the top like Learning Management System , AICC , SCORM. For example, when I view my blog's content through the eLearning Learning lens , it shows me that relative to other sources of content in the system, I tend to talk about: eLearning 2.0 (130) 130) Work Skills (26) PWLE (16) Flash Quiz (8) Knowledge Work (40) That's a pretty fair representation of topics that I talk about.

As a quick example, we choose our preferred search engine in large part because we feel it will be the best investment of time to find the best quality information. Focus on Personal Work and Learning Environments (PWLE) - More Discussion and Personal Work and Learning Environments. John Seely Brown and Richard P. Adler's recent article - Minds on Fire: Open Education, the Long Tail, and Learning 2.0 talks about the implications of the Long Tail on Education.

Learned about Learning in 2009

During the year, I’ve had fantastic conversations through LearnTrends around SharePoint , Examples and Tour of Different Kinds of eLearning , Social Learning , and the Business of Learning. It’s very powerful stuff and an important extension to my PWLE. It’s always fun at the end of the year to go back and take a look at what you’ve been working on, what you’ve learned during the year. I’ve been doing this the past few years.
