I mentioned that Adaptive Thinking that promotes adaptive expertise is what makes us learners, takes us out of our preconceived notions formed by our domain expertise, and allows us to probe and respond to changing situations with greater elasticity. Expertise in Adaptive Thinking develops out of deliberate practice, which is at the heart of ATTM. Work vs play : Characteristically, deliberate practice feels more like work and is more effortful than casual performance.

However, during my tenure at ThoughtWorks , I learned and realized that “being agile” is a philosophy, a way of working and living, that is going to determine whether we survive and thrive or fade into oblivion in this VUCA world. Work Skills Changing Most of us who used to use these things know somewhat know that they really aren't in use anymore. In presentations, I often will cite this as an example of the kinds of changes in work skills that have occurred and are constantly occurring.

We find that knowledge work has replaced manual labor as the predominant form of work. Most important for instruction in information age paradigm: Think in terms of a task space (project-based learning, problem-based learning, inquiry-based…) – students work together on a task until they encounter a knowledge gap. Evaluating Performance of Concept Workers

Evaluator knowledge limit - In most cases, the person doing the performance evaluation knows less about the subject that the performer. To me this has heightened my sensitivity to the need for concept workers to reach out to people for knowledge work tasks in order to ensure they will receive a good evaluation. I'm coming to believe this is the most important Knowledge Worker Skill Gap.
