An API (Application Program Interface) enables an interface from a piece of software to communicate with another piece of software (in its simplest form) or multiple pieces of software (called a mashup). Twitter has APIs, so does Facebook, even Linkedin. Facebook. Here is just a few of ones I like, that are unique and you could use in your LMS/LCMS/CMS, Learning Portal (caveat: your vendor must be able to accept APIs, otherwise it won’t work). Mashups.

What’s hurting the LMS market

Revenues across the board are up, profit margins are healthy and competition is on-going (always a good thing). Illogical – I often see systems that add features that seem as though they tossed a bunch of ideas on a wall and whatever stuck up there, went into their platform. Facebook is not a driver for sales, and social media is in fact, one component of an effective digital marketing strategy. The LMS market is strong.

The fastest growing segment on Facebook is 55 to 65 year old women. When so many potential customers are seeing the advantages of open source, creating their own learning or VLE portals or seeing the value of various social media types and incorporating them into some type of social learning community, the “do nothing&# spin is well, a time warp into the past. Time for these vendors to wake up, or see your audience share disappear.

What I didn't realize was that my mother often saw pictures of her grandchildren on facebook and clicked the SHARE button to share it on her wall. If you could have your real time Twitter, Linkedin feeds, Facebook and some other social media capability, and your end user did not have to open any other screens, what is the likelihood, that your system would increase in sales?

If they were doing it, Facebook like page, a crummy blog that looks nothing like a real blog, a Twitter like feed, maybe RSS, text chat and YouTube functions and upload/download angle. You could count on your hand the number of vendors even looking at it, and I’m not just talking LMSs/Learning Portals, but content authoring tools and other products. Vendors are adding more “comments&# and voting i.e. yes or no or thumbs up/thumbs down features.

You can share the content in Facebook with your Facebook friends. As I have said before, mobile learning and tablets is going to end up being the biggest thing in the last 10 years in the e-learning industry. These trends and a few others are starting to peek up, and will continue to do so.
