This content start point is the course itself and the computer server environment that hosts it. First is the file size of the course itself. This is the number you see when you look (in Windows Explorer for example) at the zip file after you have published your course. The size of your course is going to affect everything downstream because it tells you just how much “water” you are trying to pipe down the hose!

Previously you would have needed a professional video editing tool to synch the Captivate movie and the talking head video. Worried about published file size? Captivate 5 gives you the option to either embed the video in the project, or to stream it from an external Flash streaming server of your choice. One of my favorite features this time is the new Video import and synch capability in Captivate. This adds a new paradigm in content authoring.

Flash files are very consistent in their playback. WMV Format, Quicktime and Real either require a streaming server to achieve the effect or do not do as good of a job. Several sources say that the same quality flash video format movie will have a larger file size and require greater bandwidth. Protection One of the specific questions I was asked was around caching and protection of the movie. The only way around this is to use a Flash Media Server.
