Some of the older smartphones may not be able to smoothly process high data loads, and some deliverables may have to be accessed through the company’s firewall, which could cause problems for devices outside the organization. The new CMI-5 standard with xAPI allows us to launch and track content without necessarily using an LMS.

“Our vendor didn’t give us the source files , but can you update these old Flash-based courses to HTML5?”. Instead, our employees are Googling quick answers outside our firewall. On the other side of things, even a straightforward PowerPoint-to-HTML5 course conversion project can be a massive undertaking.

In many organizations the courses are locked behind firewalls or LMS and the learner has limited access to them. Learnnovators: What changes/shifts do you foresee in the support for animations and complex simulations in this ‘No Flash’ age? Tom: HTML5 is all the rage. That’s not the case with HTML5.

Taken together, that means you’d like a single system for storing and tracking content and learner activity, and that system should reside behind a firewall with at least one and possibly more login requirements to prevent unauthorized eyeballs on sensitive information. At a minimum, that means HTML5, not Flash, for tablets and phones.
